I live in a barren area for good employment, so it's common for me to put 600 or miles on my car a week. But the plus side is I work along side some really great people, and do cool jobs that I enjoy. Well I have to do major repairs on my car, it's not driveable.
I was able to work for a local company who has had employee problems(INS) I guess I should be thankful I have a check coming in at all, even though its not much, but I think tomorrow is my last day. On a scale of 1 to 10 on quality work, they preform around a 4, but think its a 10. The owner is a psycho. Everyone is afraid of him. He's kind of a bully and seems to like to put everyone down. My ego has taking a big hit. I am just the old slow guy.
I know better then to offer my opinion, but there has been several occasions where I've made a suggestion or voiced a thought, and He give's me a look like I ask to date his daughter or something. He was explaining what he wanted done on a tree today, a sever height reduction. I suggested we do a drop crotch , Cut out one leader and you had your tree in the tree, I could see it. He tell me in front of the whole crew, to go drag brush from the back yard, and gave me "the look".
The tree was hideous. big heading cuts with one little twig on them. There was a mimosa to be trimmed, I offered to do it. I was told not to touch it, because it had to be done right!:msp_angry:
I was hoping to bank a few weeks of checks, but i worry I'll lose my temper. when I get mad I just smile and say nothing, but inside I'm fuming. I need to just swallow my pride, collect my checks for a few weeks to get back on my feet, but it bothers me that some how I have become the village idiot and truck driver.
I worked for another company out here a few years ago, I left on the second day, the owner said he didn't think I've ever trimmed trees before. I just couldn't do the work he wanted me to do to those trees. Both of those guys claim to be arborist(but no ISA certs)
The funny thing is I have known lots of owner/operators like these guys. I guess its an easy attitude to develop with all the screw ups that drift in and out of this buisness.
I am just venting, I know others have worked for guys and companys like that, mean, self adsorbed lil Hitlers.
I think tomorrow is my last day there, Man's got to have some pride. I love doing tree work, why let some a-hole spoil it for me.

...

u got more patience then me... i would have told him to #### off... then i would have stuck my thumb in his eye, stomped on his foot, and finished with a stiff uppercut to the balls....

"Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour."

Don't sacrifice your standards for this arogant hack. Unfortunately, you can't thrash idiots any more. They call the cops, the cops come with guns drawn, the State's Attorney demands 10 thousand dollars of bail, the judge was raised as a nancy and agrees, and several thousand dollars and a year of probation and community service later, the hack is standing on everyone else shoulders beeming triumphantly. If we could thrash idiots like in the old days, we would have fewer fools.

And thanks to you, Beasty, I am foot locking like a champ. Not gonna win any races; yet. :msp_wink:

At your age and experience, you would be a great asset to any mid-sized to large company. I know some hate the idea, but something to think about. I am almost 52. I quit climbing at 42, more stress in management, but the body feel's better. Just my opinion.
How far is Upland from you? Just curious.
Jeff

I started at 5 today on a little complex, had to get an early start before the parking lot started filling up. I was milling over things in my head while doing several small jacaranda, I was told to take em at the old cuts. I took them about a foot above the old cuts, so there would be some green at lest left in them. Didn't look to bad for hammered parking lot trees. Then the foremen who I doubt knows a jacaranda from a pine, told me to take them down another foot. I said ,"they'll just be stubs sticking up." He said," I know that's what I want," At that minuet a great weight was taking off me. I stubbed the trees and told him this is my last day here. I was happy for rest the day. Collected all my tools and equipment at the end of the day and blissfully went home knowing I won't have to put up with that any more.
The owner was camping so I didn't get to see him in person, maybe a good thing.

We started a branch there early this year. You don't need to wait to get into management. Just gotta do it.

You ever think about relocating for better opportunities. Im always on the look out for good Guys, have plenty of opportunities to move up into management.

Matt, I was born and raised here in So CAL. I don't go out side when its under 60 deg. and rarely have I ever worked in the rain, and my only hobby is ocean kayaking fishing. My wife has been at the same job for 15 years and is really well paid. I would be lost out side of Calif.
I have lot of experience working with knuckleboom cranes and often read your posts with envy, but relocation doesn't seem like an option to me right now though.
Jeff, PM sent.

I tried working for another company, many, many years ago. The boss was the biggest :censored:-hole I had ever met. One day, at a management meeting, as he droned on and on, I fell fast asleep, while he was talking to me. He really was that boring and self-important. When I woke up, I was confused, at first. I asked my assistant manager what happened. She told me that I fell asleep and that the owner told her to just let me sleep, as I obviously was working too hard and needed it. In the next management meeting, where the second in command let it be known that he had followed me on some gigs to secretly observe me, I stood up, told him he was an :censored:-hole, and quit, on the spot. A fellow worker told me to hold on and that he was coming with me. We went and had a great breakfast and parted company. I still savor memories of my falling asleep and my way of quitting this pos company. Quitting can be very liberating. Enjoy the moment and know that you'll move on to much better things as your expertise and knowledge in our profession will not be kept down. Best of luck to you.

Be glad you're not around east Tennessee.

It's so bad I just got out of it all together. It's amazing more people don't get killed here.

pretty pathetic.

Well what do ya know, there are Tramp Arborists like there are Tramp Loggers and Tramp Bushlers.
Way ta go! !! I've got that nice weight lifted off feeling a few, several dozen times. I guess I'm a trampaholic.
I wonder if I just invented a word?

It's a lot healthier to live in peace than to work in strife. I hope your next one is a keeper BM.

Thanks everyone for being supported, but now I got what I deserve I guess. Yes the saga continues, and I'm an idiot. The owner was calling me so I had to talk to him a few days later. I guess when I left, so did a groundsmen and the other climber. He was crying he had to get these two jobs done. I was leaving to see my Daughter in Az. during her school break(she's at NAU)Yesterday, but had to postpone in tell Monday. So feeling bad for this guy, I called him and said I would work today. I also got him two other climbers to work for him Saturday and Sunday.
So I am at a job dragging brush while the one climber he has left is spiking up a Euc to top it(I refused), and I get a call. My wife's father is in the ER with internal bleeding and their not sure he's going to make it. I have the car its at the yard 20 min. away. My Wife is hysterical. I tell the formen I got to go, Sorry. We have a small truck and the chipper truck there, I ask to take the P.U. and they can drive the chipper truck home. I'm told they're leaving the chipper truck on the job over night, and to call the Boss. I call him and ask if someone can drive me to the yard. He said no. the job was under bidded and he's losing money already, and that he would come get me. I ask how long, he says, I'll be there when I get there.
A half hour passes .My wife took the bus home from work and wants to know how long I'll be. I have the foremen call again. He is still an hour away, but said after all the brush is chipped we can leave. I'm working like a mad man, but after 20 min. I say screw it. I try to call a taxi. None are in the area I am told. I'm getting border line hysterical my self now. Car jacking the crew truck is crossing my mind. The climber, bless his tree topping heart, offers to drive me in the P.U. though it might mean his job. It took 18 min. to get to the yard. I tried to give him 20 dollars for gas (to put in the work truck)so he wouldn't get in as much trouble, he wouldn't take it. Says he's probably going to quit. I do 110 mph using the car pool lane as needed in late afternoon traffic and make it home in 15 min. My Wife is waiting out on the main street from our house for me.
Her Dad almost died, but is now in serous but stable condition.
OK I am an idiot, granted, don't I learn, but what kind of animal is that man. That morning I use a cuss word, and he told me to watch my mouth, their a Christian business.
This just seemed like a nightmare. My biker Dad always told me," no good deed, no matter how small. Will go unpunished. So it seems. We have no family or friends living near by I could call. But If I know it was going to take over an hour and half we could of call someone in the next county.
I hope putting my experience to day in this thread isn't inappropriate. It helps calm me down some, and from doing some thing rash.
