Found a stack of metal fencing panels 8x5 sections (used) for $75
I didn't count them but the stack is about 7 feet tall. (maybe 20 sections or more)
There not rusty at all, still good paint.
I'm thinking they may make great firewood racks.
Are they worth 75 bucks? Not sure what the scrap value is.

Well crap, never mind. I told the guy I would get them in the morning. He calls back 30 min later and said a guy just offed him 100 bucks and would take them right then. Guess he beat me to it. I do think its kinda cheesy of him, when I had dibs on them.

If that was on a forum I'd say yes it's pretty cheesy of him. On Craigslist though I'd say it's fair game, I sell A ton of stuff on CL and the amount of people that send me a text or email or call me and say I'll take them and never show is probably 60%. I've held things for people and they never show, meanwhile I tell the 3 others that offered my asking price they're spoken for. It's who gets there with cash first when I post my stuff on Craigslist now.

Let me clarify. I was there at there yard picking up some used wood fence panels. I spotted the metal fence after I had already loaded with wood and asked if they were free too. He said 75 bucks and I said I would be back tomorrow. So this was not just a phone call or email. I was there and we shook on it.
I was also there the day before and I hauled off a load of wood and the metal fence was not there the day before.

If you shook that's a deal in my book, i didn't realize you were there, thought it was a craigslist deal.

Pretty lame of the guy, it's a shame a handshake doesn't mean what it used too.

They were probably aluminum anyway and not that strong. Consider it a blessing you didn't get them.
They were metal, not aluminum. I would have gotten them first had I known before I loaded the wood.
No big loss I guess, just erks me when you shake on a deal and then back out 30 min later, knowing I had just hauled off 2 loads of there crap already.

I went back over there the next day to pick up some more wood panels and the stack of metal fence was still sitting there.
I pointed it out and said. "You told me someone took it yesterday". He said the guy did the same as me and had loaded the wood first and couldn't load it all in one trip. Turns out the guy didn't leave any money and didn't come back to pick it up. He asked me if I still wanted it and I refused. I said no thanks. You stabbed me in the back the first time, I'm not giving you a chance to do it again. We made a deal and shook on it and you turned around and sold it out from under me. I said I wouldn't take it now even if it was free. He just shut up and walked off.

MY 2 cents is a hand shake does not TRUMP some green greasing the palms.
Want me to hold it for ya then put some money down that simple.

:D Al

In that case I ask for 1/2 up front and I'll hold for a month.

If there shady enough to make a deal and seal it with a hand shake, then turn around and sell it out from under me because someone offered more money, is not someone I would trust holding cash as a deposit. When I say I'm gonna do something, 99% of the time that's exactly what I will do. I am a man of my word. To bad others are not honorable.
He tried to make more money but shot himself in the foot instead. The guy that offered more money didn't come back. I did. And I would have taken the stack for the same as we shock on, But he was greedy and now it is still sitting there. That's karma dealing with his dishonesty.
I never leave a deposit. If I don't have the cash in my pocket or they wont hold it, then that deal was not meant for me. That's karma's way of keeping me out of trouble.

Bottom line, he got greedy and when the better money fell through he wanted me to bail him out.
Nope, not gonna happen. I don't reward bad behavior.

I started a new fence project that will have wood storage built into it.
This is why I am collecting used wood fence panels.
About 10 years ago I had a barn full of used wood that I had collected over the years.
I needed to clean out the barn and I also needed a place to store firewood.
I built some racks and put them along side my fence line with the wood and they work great.
But they are not treated wood and have deteriorated over the years.
At the time I put them there I had a different neighbor and I didn't care what they looked like.
In fact the uglier the better.
He died and I have a new neighbor that I have known all my life and we get along very well.
So I'm gonna replace the racks with a new fence and put a better cover and use better wood.
I'm using cedar instead of treated wood except for the framing wood, it's treated.
My neighbor found me a better fence company to get used wood from. So I won't be going back where the guy broke our deal.

The old and ugly first.
Here is the old racks that I am replacing. There divided up into 4'x4' sections with a tarp over the top and down the back side.
I later added the R panels but the racks had already had started rotting away.

Now for the new (used wood) fence with built in wood rack storage.
My neighbor is excited about the new fence and has volunteered to help.

The old racks are 5 feet tall and a little hard to load and unload because you have to duck under. The new rack wall is 7 foot tall with R panel for a roof. I'm running the R panel long ways giving me a 3 foot cover over the stacks. This makes a nice dry out of the way storage that also serves as a good solid fence. My neighbor is going to put R panels on his side to cover the back side of the wood fence.
What do they always say? Good fences make good neighbors. lol

Man my new fence suppler is awesome. Less then a mile from my house and there wood is in much better shape. I got about 40 panels today that look almost brand new.

The back sides of those stacks won't breathe very good. Think I'd leave lots of gaps. Or do chainlink?

I understand the concern but, I built the first racks 10 years ago and they have proven to work very well. They are also only open on the front side. The wood season's just fine and keeps very well in these racks. These racks sit under live oak tree canopy's and get almost no sun. I tried stacking with no cover and the wood gets fungus very fast because it doesn't dry after a rain. By simply covering the top, the wood doesn't get any fungus and dry's like lumber. Been doing it for 10 years, and it works great. Don't see why that would change. The concept works great.
