A friend of mine and I are looking at getting a decent used chipper. Something thats auto feed and can handle about 5" stuff and light enough to pull with a 3/4 ton pickup. Looking to spend about $3,000. Is this unreasonable? There's an older Ashplundh chipper thats been on CL for awhile and they want $5,000 for it, a bit much for a 30 yr old machine. Any recommendations?

Auto feed for 3k? I think not. The old Asplundh Whisper chippers are like the energizer bunny, they just keep going. Simple machines that are easy to work on, tow, move, etc. They make bigger chips though, but because of the things I have mentioned, perhaps you can get one.

You might want to look at craigslist in other towns besides your own. You might have to travel to get the chipper you desire. I got mine off of ebay last year. Paid 11K for a Bandit 90 9" chipper with only 3 hours on it. It was a 97 model but was bought buy a municipality with FEMA money for a storm, used once and garaged for 10 years. Had to travel 6 hours to pick it up in AR but was well worth the trip. Great deals come up from time to time but you have to keep your eyes peeled and cast a wide net to search for them.

I've seen some decent chippers in the Tradin Post here, but a bit more money. It's mostly my buddy's money and I'm trying to talk him into spending a bit more on a decent machine. He wants to go out on his own, he has the knowhow but I have the business skill.

There's a place down in Rockford IL that deals in a lot of chippers, it'd almost be worth a trip down there.

the place is rockford, you you talking about JTEN? is so i bought mine from larry there last november and love my asplundh. I paid less than $1,000 for it.
