Found an ad for an old poulan 245a with bow and a homelite super xl, $50 each.
Guy messaged me ,said he had 2 more saws he'll toss in free.
Was very pleased what I got.

Super XL only needed a fuel line and carb adjustment. Had a brand new full chisel chain and 20" pro bar on it. Cut a 24 inch red oak log very well.

028 AV wood boss cranked on first pull, very strong saw . Cranks on first pull whether choked or not. Just needed a good sharpen

MS 271 just needed a coil, 150 psi compression . Coil is in the mail.

The 245a unfortunately has 80 psi compression and won't start. All parts are there and has great spark, cylinder looks good( I think) going to try rings, the 74cc and bow were what intrigued me. My dad has a 361.

On the 245...
80psi... that's not good. Mine comes in around 120psi after the rebuild. Yeah, what you can see of the jug looks good (I assume you are looking through the exhaust port), but there's the exhaust side that you can't see. That thing is a 3D jigsaw puzzle, so you're looking at a full teardown to get to the jug.

Ring broke, snagged the top of the x-fer port, and carved its way to the top.... on the exhaust side.

Try to save the fuel tank gasket. When reassembling the one I rebuilt, I reused the gasket and gooped it up with Permatex #2. So far it's holding.

Crank seals (if you need them)... the flywheel side is a standard size and is still in production. The PTO side is no longer in production and may be a bit dificult to find.

Man I really want to save the 245 so i guess im gonna try a rebuild. And yes 80 definitely was not what I wanted to see, but I got a killer deal regardless and another project lol.
Ill post a pic later of cylinder from exhaust side and see what yall think.

Questionable at best. I don't like the different sheen on the cylinder wall. These jugs are chrome plated aluminum, and the chrome plating isn't as shiny as aluminum. I think some of the plating has been worn down to the aluminum.

Also, I see chatter marks in the exposed bright aluminum. I'd like to see what the slug and jug look like once you get it opened up.

BTW, the 306 (which is 60cc) is the same saw as the 245, except for the slug, rings, and jug. If you can't find 245 top end parts, a 306 top end would get you back into business (albeit with a smaller displacement saw).

Thanks man, I'll break it down and see what I got. Would love to be able to keep the 74cc , but we'll see. I'll get more pics and better quality
