I ordered my Silky today, hopefully I can start using it Saturday, if it will stop raining. Then I ordered a few TriActs, so I will be ANSI compliant. I also got the Fert. and Support. ANSI books. The utility specialist cert book, and the DVD on cranes.

I looked at Dr. Shingo's book, but the cost of it right now is, IMHO, way to high. 84 dollars for (almost) any book, cept for college, is too high. So I agree with Butch that prices on books are overinflated.

Now that I got the Silky and the TriActs, where am I to go now.... A chipper and a crane!

Yea, its a VHS rather than a DVD. That is gonna be as close as I see someone else (non hack) doin a tech removal.

What gear are you talkin about blue? I figured that the prices were upped some because of small volume, but $84, thats a tad high. I aint sayin that I aint gonna get it, but that the price seems high to me. I personally don't mind spending whatever amount, as long as I need it or really want it, as long as its the best, making it an investment, not a waste of money. (what a run-on sentence)

high price

In the school of hardknocks where one lesson gone bad could put you Darwin Awards list the books are a bargain. You should call around to used book stores near a university to get a better price. Call and request it and let them look for it for you, by the time you have the money they may find you a used copy for half the price. So let thr guys that find books for a living look for it and go sharppen your chains and tune the saws for tomorrows work while they do the leg work.

Mark Chisholm is a great guy and one of the best climbers ever!!!! That however doesn't translate into an action packed video production... I was disappointed with the lack of practical information... and told Mark so... He said they wanted to pretty much stay with covering the ANSI standards. And they only did the live shoot on one job.
He's a tree climber, not a video producer so its not on him... It takes a lot of pre-plannning and is very expensive to produce videos.... I wonder if they even broke even on it... To tell you the truth, I learned more in one day of working with a genius crane operator, than I learned from the video. Course that was a $964 day (for the crane).
Seems like you really have to see someone who knows what they're doing in action, to learn this stuff...

Let us know when you use that Silky... we wanna hear you BRAG BOY!!

Good for you on the books & vid. Expensive, but always a good buy in the long run.

:D

Your a lucky guy to have a Silky as your first hand saw. Your gonna wonder how you got along before without it.
One word of warning! DO NOT CUT YOURSELF!!! This might sound silly, but it happens ALL THE TIME! And I guarantee you WILL cut yourself - its just a matter of how severely you do it.
So, just be aware of that.

On that note, sharing a Zubat is like sharing a needle.

cuts

never mind not cutting your self, stay away from the blade, dont touch it, even a blunt saw cuts flesh easily.....and i always cut myself in between my fingers, so it takes ages to heal

Speaking of high prices... I noticed on Douglas Dent's website he's selling a series of 10 videos for a mere $260 each....
That just goes to show how expensive video production is...
He could sell 10 sets for 25K...
I'll have to see if I can borrow mine from the library..

cant beat a silky ,can anyone tell me where too get hold of dvds on crane take downs many thanks:blob2:

JAMIE,
how the hell do you manage to cut yourself in between the fingers!on the forearm i can understand.worst i ever did was to stab into a vein near my wrist knockin' a bit off dead out!filled my glove up in 20secs

Any limited print book will be sky high in price. It too me a while to cough up the dough for Harris's "arboriculture". Then I wished I'd'a done it sooner.

Get Harris first, then use the Shigo and others to build upon. You can go to half.com or the like and find the older editions for a very reasonable price.

I have quite a few books, I was just complainin on the price of the books. Like I said, I don't mine the cost, as long as it is worth it. I think that I am goin to order the Arbormaster Series on climbing ad Rigging. Deffinitaly the riggging set. I already got the book,

I don't plan on cutting myself, it may happen, it may not. I aint gonna fear the blade, I just aint gonna run it across my skin.

I bet, no, I KNOW there isn't a single hand saw user here that hasn't cut themselves.
Prepare to bleed. Just not too much. And the pain is quite unique.

I will let yall know when I cut myself. On that note, super glue does wonders on cuts like those, it is like liquid stitches.

hey im with you on jamie ,now ive cut my thumbs forearm i think but never between my fingers lol

I never bought a book and regretted it later. But I'm a book fiend.

I cut myself on the thigh once. I was cutting through, my leg was under the branch, kindof holding me in place while I made the cut. I usually slow down as I get toward the end of the cut. Well, the bottom of the branch was rotten about half way through. I cut through the first half and in one stroke went all the way through the bottom half and my thigh before I realized what had happened. It wasn't a horrible cut....just enough to wake me up.

Gotta be careful with those darned things!

love
