I'm looking for guidance in transfering 3 branches from one side to the other side of the trunk of my mature austrian pine . I was thinking of doing this by drill graft of branches that would be 20'' long & 3/4 '' in diameter into a drilled hole in the trunk of 2'' to 3'' in deapth.

With Pine it will be most difficult to have union.
It is recommended to graft with new growth, taken from firm, partly matured wood. Info taken from Plant Propogation Hartman, Kester Davies.
I do not know your experiences with grafting but temps, light and moisture are all crucial for success.
Best of luck.

You need and existing branch to graft on to.
Branches over an inche dia usually don't take as well.
Timing is very important. it needs to be done during dormancy.

Thank you for your input. What other option is available to fill a void of branches on a portion of one side of this tree?

Francis

Don't see any way to fill a void.Pruning may be the answer.By balancing the branching around the tree it's possible to eliminate the appearance of a void. You would need a experienced arborist with a good eye.
Pictures, which provide visual clues are helpful.....
