I spoke with the guy in charge of Rayoniers lease program last fall. He said they had three illegal dumps to clean up and one case of vandalism (actually metal thieves) in the year before. His way of legitimizing the pay to access.
Thing is I know the area pretty well and I knew of each location. all three of the dumps were outside gates an the metal thieves had to go through three gates to get to the logging side they hit.
I don't think the locked gates will solve the problem. It seems like the kind of people who will dump or steal always find a way and everyone else pays for it.

That being said I don't think the pay to access has anything to do with dumping, vandalism, theft or road maintenance, all things I hear cited.

That's exactly right. Worse, 90% of the dump sites I have found and reported (I have a database I keep track of this stuff in) contain children's clothes, children's toys, or diaper debris... which means that the kind of person who goes out of their way to dump is teaching their kids to do the same.

The road maintenance is an issue, but lets be real whats a little maintenance in comparison to a lot of public good will. We'll see how things shape up with the County rule change. It will very likely go to court and the legislature will more than likely get involved. Weyco is pushing ahead. I was gonna get a pic of the new signs up but was in a hurry to leave my dads and get home so I didn't. I think Green Diamond will drop their fee access or just charge for driving access after this year. Weyco I think is going to be the lone pariah. I can say with authority a previously mentioned company makes very little on the hunting leases. My personal opinion is if this ends up with even more backlash and legal wrangling it will be dropped by that company. To put it mildly in true Weyco fashion they just shot for the moon and were typical dicks. At least Rayonier has some non fee access areas... typically the less desirable areas of course. And this is absolutely not about dumping as Hump has pointed out.
