I joined last month and I've been checking out the scene. Man this place is wonderful! It's what the internet was meant for. I'm a woodworker and wanted to cut some overhead and get to some choice pieces of wood without selling blood to cover the cost. Last year I started researching milling and equipment. Ran into a good deal on a Logosol M7 with a Stihl 64 about 10' of ripping chain and other accesories not to far away and purchased it. Limited then on space and time I stored it until a month ago and found this site. Needless to say I've cleaned off the saw, started repairing minor issues and gearing up to go. I've used chain saws before and believe me I respect everything with teeth (including hair combs) safety is paramount but wanted to gain more insight on them. I've read one members thread who's currently rebuilding his 064 and its a dream come true. Got my eye on some free craigslist logs and a bigger saw for the M7, wanna keep the 064 for felling, bucking and limbing. If anyone has tips please drop a line. Thank you all for sharing the knowledge!

you're doomed.

seriously tho, if you haven't read the sticky up top that's a good source of tips and tricks. otherwise i'd just start reading thru old threads that seem interesting. lots of knowledge for sure.
cheers

Unless you are very good with dealing with change, and adapting to different situations, dont even consider cutting a single log with any kind of mill. Half an inch into your first cut you will be in shock, after you finish the cut and pull off your slap your screwed, seriously screwed. You will be thinking about milling no stop, your daily goings on will now allow you to see all the tress and logs you have never seen before, I wont quit my job but sure would be nice if the wife left me so i could mill more often! Kidding

Its a great vocation or hobby how every you look at it, yourself being a woodworker its an extension of your art.

Welcome to AS.

Ditto Hamish,

My brother says that when we are out hunting in the hills I look at trees different, like an old dog looking for that right tree. You will for awhile, eat, sleep and talk milling to everyone once you have milled that first slab of wood and have seen the trees inter beauty. ( that sounded zen like...) One suggestion, make sure you have room to store the wood you mill, or find a neighbor who will let you store it at his place and maybe even get him hooked on milling also, I did. Welcome aboard dude, you've come to the right place for help and suggestions with your milling.

Could'nt have said it better. Truly addicting. I'm starting to resemble the Mexicans guys driving the trucks full of scrap metal, except I have logs and crotch sections! Most fun I have all week! Something about pulling that first slab off and smiling like a hillbilly. I wish the best to you and your new addiction!

Neighbors might not like the noise......or the fact that my front yard smells like a barnyard....one hell of a Stink-oak!!!!! The slabs practically had skid-marks :msp_scared:.

My buddy just found an ash tree today that someone cut down in their yard near his house, he's jacked.

You can smell those free cut trees just laying there... :)
