Gri gri or not

How are you planning on using the grigri in place of a friction hitch? Are you using the grigri for a RADS setup (srt)? If so, sure, it'll work great. I'm not sure there's anyway you could utilize a grigri for anything in drt.

grigri use

The grigri shines in single line use. SRT. You can use in double rope in place of prussic. No sit back like a prussic. Capture maximum rope movement each time. Most easy climbs you can one hand advance rope. For off trunk climbs-free hanging use a form of RADS. Use the advanced search for more info. On the larger grigri (older unit) 11mm rope moves smoothly thru. The larger 12mm or 1\2 in rope causes friction in unit. Stay within grigri specs on rope size. Having sometype of rope wrench above grigri help in smooth one hand descents. But can be used without. Look at petzl's site for usefull info. Climb on...

I use my gri gri mostly for SRT on the rads system, but there are lots of times I'll for one reason or another switch over to drt and It works well for descending(on small dia. ropes)but it's no replacement for a prussic on Drt for limbwalking and stuff. It's a great tool and you'll probably find lots of uses for it, but its no spiderjack either.
I just got a rope wrench, it does some cool stuff, but it doesn't excel at everything. I would hate to not have my gri gri. It's a valuable tool when it fits the job. I use it on spars and palms as my second tie in too. It's a good tool to have in the arsenal.

Hey Beastmaster, Do you girth hitch your climbing line around the spar SRT for back up with the GriGri? I would like to get one as well but cant justify it right now. I have the rope wrench as well. I really like it, but like you said it has place. I want something I can use on the spar to get down in a hurry. I have a figure 8 I only used once like 10 years ago. I have been doing all my pruning with the wrench/ SRT and a vt which I am really getting good at. Awhile back I tried a girth hitched spar SRT with vt on a pine. The hitch got sap on it and was freezing up! Sorry if I am off subject here: wink
