Guys,

When you go to a job. Do you grind 100% of the stump out? IOW's until you see the underside of the soil? I'm not talking about the roots but the base?

I had a guy requesting a minimum of 12" per stump.

Thanks,

Tom

I usually go about 6-10" below the ground. I always ask the customer what they plan to do with the are where the stump is. They usually just want it down to plant grass over it.
Now and then, someone wants it totally gone so they can excavate for a patio or driveway. Then I try to clear through the bottom of the stump and all roots. This is usually about 18-20" in this area. I do charge a little more if they want to go deep.
I had an interesting grinding job a week ago. Landowner wanted to build a foundation for a sign exactly where a large stump was located. I ended up going 36" deep to get it all. Used a Bobcat to remove chips and ramp down to bottom. Then ground again, built another ramp down, did this 4 times to get down 36". Charged by the hour on that job.

Depends on what they want to pay for. I'll dig it 6' deep if they pay enough. :)

We consider a normal grind to be 6" to 8" deep and all visible surface roots. We do however grind a lot of tree planting holes (36" x 36" x 24" deep ) for my landscapers. Normally do these with the Alpine Magnums.

We have been recently grinding out old street tree stumps to replant with quite big specimens. Grinding in a opening 1.2m x1.2m and grinding down to the same depth is hard going. Gotta love those saw powered grinders.

Depends on your client but enough to kill off the tree stumps ability to re grow is minimum. If the job needs to go lower beware if any underground assets or you can come to grief.
Last week had to hand dig around these old girls as all sorts of pipe wires and lines where beside & under. Only when all checked could we send in the grinder. Try gettin ya wheel down a foot n half know-in that high pressure gas is hissin some where close. Just like yours Timber Mc P needed to get out the old to put in nice big newbie trees.
