here's a little over half of my dull chain collection. ( I have over 100.)
The fun part is untangling them.

during Isabel, I just bought more and more as we needed them.

JPS, think I'm set for life?:D

Hi Treeslayer the 511 is a good investment, I have had mine since 83' with no problems. Should you feel the need to graduate to a Silvey square grinder in the future the 511 is indispensable for cleaning out gullets and modifying round ground chisel for chainsaw lumbermaking.

supposdly, but I have'nt tried yet.
I think after you round off the wheel, you would need to put a wheel on that has not been dressed.

better let someone more knowlegable take over, I only know enough to be dangerous.:D

Hi Eric, I have often thought the same. The purests may say no, but with the right stone it may be possible to it to some degree.
It wouldn't hurt to experiment, but I think the angle may not be shallow enough.

John, I admire your effort but this sure looks like a case of beauty being in the eye of the beerholder! LOL.

Let us know if it cuts.

Hi Russ, glad you like my newfangled cutter. Will go out now and try it on a movie. BRB.
I have been told that it is the sideplate and working corner that cut the chip, but the limiting factor may be the steep angle under the top plate that will gouge more than clear the chip.

Do you guys think that a grinder is worthwhile for a guy like me? I normally hand file them and if they get badly rocked out or they get uneven I go and spend the 4.25 at a sharpening place rather than fixing it by hand filing. I don't want to make racing chains or anything, just practical woods chains.

I usually file my saws every evening if I've been cutting hard that day. If they get dull in the woods I just get pre-sharpened chain out of my toolbox. So basically I'm talking maybe 20 filings per week, but most of those are quick 5-10 minute hand filings.

Also, is a grinder an easier way to file the rakers?
