Well here it is, right off the grinder, 9" poplar with 066 and 16" bar 33RS, 8 pin. The cut may have been faster had I cleaned the gullets.
Not bad for the girls we are running with.

That looked like it cut pretty good to me. I may go buy me one of the oregon grinders. Been thinking about it for awhile. Im tired of the 40 mile round trip to get mine sharpend and most of the time I have to leave them which turns into 80 miles. Been a time or two that on new chains that just needed touched up when I got them back half the tooth was gone on the whole chain. dont care for that to much.

Jeez, well I`ll be darned, that looked pretty good John! You aren`t flim flamming us are you? :D

Hi CM a grinder stone will do the work of several dozen files.
Grinding will make you a good hand filer in the woods.

OK, I'm reading some threads from that search now. Is it really worth it though? How much time will I save to sharpen a chain if the chain is only slightly dull? And how much will it cost me for a good grider? Will the chain be just as well sharpened as with hand filing? Is it easy to learn to use one?

chainsaw it would be well worth it to me. If you waited for me to file your chain, you would be asleep befor I got don. If you got the grinder set rite I would think the cutters would be about true as you could get them.

Using a grinder takes a little experimentation to get your system down. I had my 511A for quite awhile before Gypo gave me a few tips to be productive. Since that time I`ve aquired and used several other grinders and find the Maxx grinder to be a little better in side to side parity than the 511a, and with the way the vise rotates you can always grind inward if you want to. They don`t cost that much more than the 511 and also have an auto clamping vise.

Chainsaw Maniac,

Hand filing is quicker on the saw and produces a slightly better edge if you are good at it. If you like to remove the chain for sharpening the grinder is quicker. Only you can decide if it`s for you. Once your neighbors know that you have a grinder you will always be able to pick up a few bucks on rain days. Just tell `em your rates up front so that they don`t start off thinking that you work for free.

Hi Russ, the movie was for real, no leg pulling. If you look at the cut you will see that the log is somewhat rippled. That is because I took the rakers down 3 strokes freehand. I am really impressed with the results but how long it will stay sharp I dont know due to the blunt under the top plate angle.
Here is the stone after I modified it.

Poplar?

Jl,
Really if you would like to impress some of us, How about cutting something like an Oar,possibly a Maple, or even an Ash. Come on. Also you have a 16 inch bar on an 066? Their is no load at all on the engine. How about taking a 20 inch bar on and tackling a real tree. My 028 stock with me doing the filing could do this. I am just breaking your derriere. It appears to cut great. Still I would like to see it cut something Hard, Ken
