Can anyone identify this growth on a sugar maple for me? I have looked through my books and done some looking on the internet to no avail.

Hard to say, looks like heart rot decay fungus maybe Dryad's Saddle? Is the fruiting body in decline or has a naturally blackened look?

That may be the simple thing that I had overlooked. I have been looking for something with a natural blackened look. This looks like it is not active anymore.

I have told the customer it was indicative of rot but it is not a death sentence for the tree. Keep an eye out for more of the same or dieback.
