I live in PA, 19403. We have several very large, beautiful and mature red oaks. We bought our house around 9 months ago and two were fully dead and 1 is about half way there. I have no clue why they died. The former owners did not know why they died and an arborist just told me trees sometimes just die... we still have several more and I am very keen to keep them healthy. I took down one of those and found the attached grubs under the bark. I think they are round headed borer grubs but was hoping someone could confirm that for me.
From what I have read, if my identification is correct, they most likely came after the tree died and not before, eventually killing it.
There was no fungi on the dead trees or signs of damage. No disturbance around the roots either.
I have purchased some bug control spray (Cutter; backyard bug control) and want to fertilize as well. Any an all advice is appreciated. I love all of our trees but know very little about making them thrive and preventing more of them from dying.
Last thing, the one I mentioned as half dead is next to (3 ft) one that is completely dead. The power companies arborist told me it was going to die because the leaves that did come out this year are not all on the tips of the branches. She said the tree is basically on life support and is going to die regardless of what I do. Any thoughts?
