Pics would have been cool...afterburner!!
Next time, I will take a pic of a chimley fire when It's dark out.
As as afterthought, a good cure for a chimley fire is just throw a cup or so of water into the firebox, which should smarten it up, unless the rafters and tarpaper start burning, at which time all that can be saved is the basement.

It was a controlled one though. I let the fire roar with the door ajar, climbed on the roof and rattled a stick down the pipe. The stick caught fire and so did the creosote.
It was just like a tiger torch effect.
Must be caused caused by all that pine I have been burning.

I'll bet that stick was the cause of it. Almost certainly it was a pine stick.

You're probably right. The pine stick was well seasoned after being on the roof all these years.
Would dumping diesel down the chimney help remedy the creosote issue, or should I just keep up with the scheduled chimney fires?

Not so sure I'd recommend water on firebrick lined or cast iron firebox. You may want to give that some more thought or add a disclaimer.
