Well I broke down and bought a splitter. I am gonna run out of wood before the winters over.

I have some Hemlock that was cut early last summer and has been bucked for a couple months. Not the best way to burn wood but I don't wanna go over my pre-buy gallons of propane.

Any way, I went to home cheapo and got the Ryobi 4 ton electric splitter for $300.

Hope it does well.

Hope it goes well for you too.

Please post impressions as I, and I'm sure a lot of members, would like to get some first hand info on these units.

Take Care

well I just got mine out of the box. But I did borrow a friends over the summer.

He has the same exact one. All I had to do is take mine out and put on the wheels to make it moveable, it took 45 seconds to do.

When I borrowed my friends I was sure that it would not split this wonder wood that I had to split. I was told it is Ash but don't really know what it is. I was splitting Oak, Maple, Black and white birch by hand with ease. This wonder wood laughed at me and all my might. The mall would bounce off and barely even dent the wood. This splitter did split it fine. Some of the rounds I would have to re-position or smack the wood off of the wedge with a maul and give it another try but in the end it all got split. I am actually burning it right now.

I will keep ya'll posted when I start splitting with mine. I am almost sure that I will run outta wood so I am gonna start splitting some hemlock that I have in case.

It's better than nothing. I'd rather be using that than a maul. Maybe some day you can upgrade to something bigger.

Yes I plan to. But like I said, I kinda had to do something soon. I will be digging out my fire wood and splitting when I get time.

Tough ash ? I cut some down this year and all I had to do was show the Fiskar to the rounds and they all pretty much just split themselves. LOL. I suspect maybe you had some elm there ?
Seriously, I could have split most of it with one hand. If it's all like this then ash is gold in my book.
Now the black cherry I cut is a different story. My 8lb. maul with all I could give bounced right off it many times before I gave up and stacked it. Sucks to stack rounds knowing they've gotta get split someday.

Anxious to hear about the splitter on tough stuff. I bet you bend it in half, but I hope not.

Ran into a wood cutting buddy yesterday. He hurt his back and borrowed one of those small splitters. Looked like a kids toy when I saw it sitting there. He ran green Locust through it. Said it had no problems with rounds around 1 1/2' diameter but he had to play with the bigger ones and not take a full 'bite'. If it will do green Locust it should do just about anything.

Splitting 1 1/2" rounds ? I burn 5" rounds whole.
