i bought the stihl HOS grinder.

yeah it was expensive but it's super quiet and well made.should last me the rest of my life.i have always been one to believe you get what you pay for.for $30 bucks you can't go wrong.even if it doesn't work it would be fun to play with.i don't see how it wouldn't work.it just may not last as long as an expensive one.when it breaks just buy a new one.or buy two now.

Here ya go $29.

$29....NONONO! Not so fast.......So i go over HF(unfortunatly it's 10min away) They have 'em stacked right at the door, so i have to "look" around first...big mistake ! Needed a couple of tarps, oooh the big wheel hand truck is on sale, bungees, a 12v water pump, misc doodads, and i just couldn't pass up the black 3 stack rolling tool chest-reg @249, on sale @ $179, dent & scratch $75. So that damn little chain grinder really cost me $293.50.......:help: The wife's out in the truck and just rolles her eyes when i load half the stuff, then drive over to the front door to get the "big stuff". She's gonna halfta put a shock collar on me next time i get near HF........:buttkick: Thanks CJ:laugh:

...been there myself Motor, there's a lot of just downright junk at those HF outlet stores, but then they also have some good stuff at bargain prices if you know how to shop between the lines. I have dozens and dozens of clamps, all styles, in my woodshop, and I'd guess 80% are HF specials. Hey... they're cheap and they work... no brainer.

I had one of them from them. They work ify.So I bought a Oregon 511A..Now all my chains I sharpen are like razors and all the chains hold a better edge to me it seems like...Plus the oregon is fully adjustable to..Unlike the fixed head of the cheaper models..I think it is fixed at a 60 degree angle..(cheaper ones)..Tell you one thing I really like my oregon 511A alot:)

Yeah, but what was the price difference? I'm ordering one of these things today, but I sure don't expect it to perform like an Oregon or Stihl grinder. For 30 bucks, I DO expect it to be good enough for now (as in, better than nothing), until I can afford a GOOD one.

You ususally DO get what you pay for, and with tools, the cheap stuff is USUALLY not worth it. But sometimes....

Hey, Alan, I used my JD yesterday to finish off bucking a 40" DBH storm felled oak. Had to quarter some of the rounds with the saw just to get them on my truck. A whole lot of cutting and that thing never complained.

So when my grinder gets here I can dress up that chain I used to trim one of my steel splitting wedges. OOOPSS!

Hey, didn't know a chainsaw could cut circles! :D

I'm interviewing for a new job that would pay considerably more. My fear is that I will get it. If we do, my wife won't stand for us living in this old farm house anymore. Then we'll have to move from this old house that burns wood.

If the new house has no chimney I'll have to sell my Buck stove insert. And I'll have no need for my chainsaws (Dolmar 143, Stihl 041, Echo 4400, Husqvarna 61, with 68 piston kit, Husqvarna 51, and McCullouch 160).

And I'll have to sell my two trailers I use for pulling loads of wood. And my chain sharpening tools will no longer be needed either. Or my chaps. Or my leather gloves.

I sure hope I don't get that job.

Well, if you do get it, let me know and I will spring for a couple beers for yiou down town while I do you the favor of carrying off all the junk so you don't have to watch.

we all have to start somewhere.

i sharpened with files for years.now we are doing tree work so taking 5 to 15 chains to the dealer for $7 a whack is no longer feasable.especially considering i have to wait 5-14 days to get them back.plus my partner likes doing the ground cutting but he likes dirt and rocks too.the dealer got my money either way.he uses the same grinder and highly recommended it.he says he has tried them all and likes the stihl the best.so far i like it and have no complaints.plus i get my chains back when i need them.
i was ready to try the HF grinder but decided as much as i am going to be using it,get the good one.if i was just cutting around the house,i'd still try the HF one.not to mention i have to do my partners 32" and 24" chains and he just bought 15 pole saw chains on ebay that need to be sharpened.i need to show him how to use this grinder now.LOL

The deed is done. I ordered one yesterday after frustration.

Tried on-line - no go "cookies have to be enabled" So just how the ... do I do that. Poke around and can't find it.

Dig last catalogue out of trash, yep there it is...ah, a 1 800 order number. Try that. Obviously talking to someone in India. I can understand about 1/2 of what he is saying. After several go arounds convincing him that I do not want to order the ???? at $249 we finally agree that I am ordering the sharpener. But he insists it is $99. States he does not have a catalogue to work from. Suggests on-line. I mention the 'cookies'. He tells me how to change it. Yep, that worked.

Solves two problems at once. Now I can get my chains done when I need them and the local shop just put up a "closing" sign. Leaves me with a 60 mile roundtrip drive to the next nearest.

No, convince her to fix the farmhouse. Hey, it's got CHARM. It's got HISTORY! It's got CHARACTER! It COULD have a new bathroom and kitchen! That's what raises are for!

Buy a book on salesmanship if you have to! :D

Exactly. If I were a professional tree man, I wouldn't even CONSIDER the HF grinder, I'd get a professional model. But for, what, maybe a dozen sharpenings a year, I can't justify the cost of the pro model, even though I know it will do a much better job.
