I have an ms390 and an O26 both take several pulls to start. Other saws I have start in 2 or 3. Anyone have any tricks to getting them to start easier? or is hard starting standard equipment on stihls???

Rick,

All of my Stihls start about the same way:

Cold: 6-7 pulls; 1 or 2 more if you can't get to the throttle to shut off the choke in time when it starts.

Warm: 1 pull

Luke Warm (sittng more than about 20-30 minutes, but previously run): 2-3 pulls.

From what I've read here, this is about normal....

I've been reading this board for a few months and this is my first post...

Yup , my 026 and 066 require about 6 quick pulls with choke on when cold. Kind of a work out but I know the routine. They eventually start. I just purchased 3 new Dolmars, the Stihls better start towing the line or else..... :)

Gents- I've got saws that start that way, and I've got saws that'll start in two pulls cold. I think that to a point, it's up to the individual saw.

So where are you Minnesotans from? My parents live in Brainerd now. They just moved up there three years ago. Nice part of the sate.

Welcome to AS both of you.

Jeff,

Living (retired to) about 35 miles north of Brainerd. About 25 miles south and east of Walker. In the country, got 20 acres of woods and living the good life!

Also, have a brother near Yakima, Wa. Little town called Zillah...

Ah yes, Walker. My first visit to my parents house a couple of years ago, and my dad was like, "Jeff, we have to go up to Walker. I want to show you this cool store, called Reed's..." Now they have their own Reed's down in Brainderd. My dad couldn't be happier.

Must be really, really happy now. They just opened a Gander Mtn there too....about 1/2 a mile from the Reed's (in the old Walmart store next to Cub's)...

It seems that every Stihl I had ever started, cold, you need to choke it at least till it bucks (trys to fire) a couple extra pulls if its real cold, take the choke off (first step or fast idle) and nurse it at first, if its not warm, a trigger snap will kill it again.

I have a sister that has a one of those 5 bed-room cabins on Pelacain Lake, my folks have a cabin on Osumwinamonkie (<sp extreme) and a lot of relation in and around Brainerd and Longview area. Yes it nice there, a little touristy in the summer. I'm in Colorado now, but could still draw ya a map to some monster fish!

No comaparison! I was there back in September. The Gander is OK, but Reed's takes them on inventory, quality of inventory, and just general store quality. The Gander feels like a dressed up, Wal-Mart with all hunting stuff in it. Reeds, I think for it's size, is on par with Cabela's as far as how "cool" the store feels.

I just moved from the Morrison area (near 285 & C470) a couple of years ago to my current abode. Lived in Co. for over 30 years. Beautiful state and climate, but too many people there now...

My 026 takes 6-7 pulls cold to start, my 046 takes about 2-3 pulls cold to start. Both start in 1-2 pulls when warmed up.

Take about a small world! I live right at C-470 and 285
Yes there are a lot of people, but there are a lot of horses also, as I shoe, so for now it works. Your right in an area that I know slighty,,,, a lifetime and you still woulded fish all the lakes near there. I have friends that live on a lake near you, called Hunter lake, just west of Wabedo. There is a place just off of 54 south of Longville, called The Prisoner or War Country , its were they keep German prisoners of war during WWII
When I was younger, I could still find the rotted remnance of the prison camp. I get back there just about every year!

No, they're not alike, although Fleet Farm is just as cool, and is my dad's other favorite. Reed's is purely an outdoors sporting goods place. They don't sell the general merchandise that Mill's does. And Reed's is on it's way to being set up like a Cabela's. You walk in, and they've got Canada geese honking playing on the speakers in the store. They've got a really nice fishing museum/exhibit you can walk through. They've got hardwood floors, hewn beam ceilings, that sort of thing. The new Reed's in Brainerd is a step up from the one in Walker. Not that I'd call it better, but they were able to build the one in Brainerd to their specs, and not just move into a building downtown like in Walker.

And I usually visit mom and dad once or twice a year, so I'll take that map to the monster fish... ;)

I think it's different with every saw. My 360 takes a couple pulls on choke to get it to cough, then take off the choke, leave it on high idle, and the next pull it starts right up.

I know where you are talking about. Small world for sure...

I lived about 1-1/2 miles east of 285 & C470. A block off of W. Quincy. Moved back here to help out with my mother and found a great place to live to boot!

I have some old tractors that I use & work on, so I stop at Fleet Farm regularly. Notin' like grabbing a saw, jumping on my loader/tractor and heading out into the woods to fill the old snow bucket full of wood!

starting

They should start in 2 to 3 pulls cold, 1 pull warm, unless conditions are extreme or the saw has sat with old fuel in it. I tell my customers to bring them back if they don't.

Oh yeah, adjust the inlet lever.

This is basically what my Stihl/Husqvarna dealer told me. 3 times on choke and one off choke. It wasn't my experience with new and differing batches of fuel over several years of time, varying temperatures, and even having the dealer go though the machine and carb. I figured out my Stihl likes to be spun (rapid pulls keeping the engine spinning) and it always fires up. My Husqvarna stuff takes 1-2 on choke and 1 off choke. The Stihl likes to spin a few times quick before catching. I love both brands equally. I've spoken to others with Stihl stuff and heard the same. Not knocking Stihl, its just a different animal. Oh, to back up that that statement, I was looking seriously at buying another Stihl at the dealer just today.

My saws usually take 6 or 7 pulls from a cold start to get them to go. When they are warm 2 pulls or 1 after 20 minutes 3 pulls. 2 choked and 1 not. My dealer said that that all of them take about that many. More so if they have a dirty carb or plug.
