can't believe I'm asking this

Hey Saw troll, what was the specs on the 048?
-Ralph

My Stihl sourses say:

Made 1980-1985
77cc/4.7cui (I believe it is 76.5 or so)
5.2 hp
16.9 lbs according to one sourse, 8.9 kg according to another. My guess is that the 16.9 one is empty powerhead.......

Here is from CSCC, it says pretty much the same.

saws

Just came into posession of 1962 Barker H-71 5.8 cu in. 1962 Barker H-91 7.98 cu in. 1965 Solo 630 3.0 cu in. All of the saws are new in the box with owners manuals. The Barker H-71 sold for $174.98, the H-91 was $189.95 in 1962. They both used Power Product engines. The EPA would love these saws they used 1/2 pint of outboard oil or SAE 30 to a gal. of gas, during the break in period it calls for 1 pint per gal and the time period was 10 minutes at no more than 1/2 throttle. I don't know too much about the Solo yet other than it is Blue. I will try to post some pictures later.

The Stihl 048 was plagued with problems from the beginning and were a poor seller. The 042 is actually a more desirable saw even though its power-to-weight ratio is much lower. The 048 initially had problems with the ignitions but the oil pumps had issues also. The 042/048 has a narrow muffler which caused heat dispersion issues. I think the main consumers of 042/048s were state and federal government land management agencies like the U.S. Forest Service. I see pallets of them for sale now in government auctions.

The 038 does not use the same piston or share any engine parts with the 042/048 family. The piston pin in all 038 (48, 50, and 52mm) models is 12mm while the piston pin in 042/048 saws is 13mm (I'm pretty sure). I do remember using an 048 52mm domed piston in a custom 281 once. The 042/048 crank has different dimensions than an 038 crank also.

Poulan 325

Besides on Mike Acres site, I have never seen a poulan 325.

Has anyone out there ran a Poulan 325 before or even seen one and held it in their hands for inspection?
I would like to just see one in person someday and maybe get hold of one for my own. So anybody do any cutting with one?

More info 042/048

I took the liberty to do a little research via my parts manuals. As it turns out the 042 and 048 list identical part numbers for the crankcases, crankshaft
base gasket and piston pin. This should indicate that a cylinder and piston combo could be installed in an 042 thus increasing the saw to 048 standards.

These saws were plagued with crankcase leaks caused by the use of slotted head screws for fasteners.A remedy is to replace these screws with torx or socket head cap screws.

Some of the 048's used a Bosc ignition while some used an SEM system.I don't know much about the Bosc although one of mine is so equipted. However the SEM is a self advancing modual,by it's design. For what ever reason some times these things will "stick" in retard and the danged saw will only run at about half speeed. The only remedy is to replace the modual.I don't know if these are still available through Stihl but are through a supply house not a sponser on this site.Other than those few things they are a pretty peppy saw both the 042 and 048.

Looks like it is a Partner design........:biggrinbounce2:

Nice looking saw chris. I think you've sent me a pic of that one before. Not sure why, but i thought it was an 048.

I think i've only owned one 042/048 parts saw and I think I ended up sending to you if i remember right?

Yeah, I have known that for awhile now. I would just like to have one and see how the 53cc's are compared to the partners saws of 49cc.
I have more posted on it on that old saw place.

i believe the 53cc one is basically the same as the later 53cc ones of th Jreds 2054, 2055, Husky 55 and Partner 540 - several different performance levels, out of the same basic engine - from 3.2 (late 2054s) to 3.8 hp (2055).....

..the others is mostly from 3.3 (55R and 540) to 3.5hp (early 2054s).
