I see all the threads about homemade splitters but all are horizontal. Has anybody made horiz/vert. style. Id like to buy one dont like price or how they are built. So was thinking of building one. Thanks:)

How do you want it built? what splitting force? Cycle speed? 2 or 4way wedge? 2-speed cycle?

I built a horizontal/vertical splitter powered by a 14 hp Vanguard twin engine with a 22 gpm two stage pump and a 5 x 24 inch ram mounted on a 8 x 8 H beam. Right now I'm in the thinking/engineering stage of putting a log lift on it because rolling and holding the big rounds when the splitter is in the vertical position is still hard on my back. The only problem that I've got is that with the H beam sticks out too far past the axle and it is a tad light on the tongue. Also, we broke two push plates off the back of the splitter because they were built too light. I don't think we will break the one that we built this time!
What do you like to know about building a splitter?
Jim

I just see alot of guys here showing off their homemade splitters and they are all horizntal. I think they are well made and I think there is some satisfation in building your own. I was just wondering if anybody had built combo unit.:)

A guy I work with built one years ago,he's just now getting into the computer/internet thing,I'll see if I can get him to post some pics/details.

Splitter

Wish I could say I built this but actually a guy I work with did all the work. I just supplied the major components.

It's got a 10 hp tecumseh with a 16 gpm 2 stage pump. Cylinder is 4" w/ 24" stroke. Works great. It's not perfect but it works really well. Works both vertically & horizontally. He used an old splitter he has as the model for this one.

I wish it wasn't quite so heavy in the front but that is a minor complaint.

Only thing he did that I would not recommend is how he made the toe plate. He used 1/4" c channel welded in sections and boxed it in on the sides. After about getting 1/2 cord of elm split it started to yield. Today after 3 cords it finally broke loose. I'll have to see if my neighbor can help me with that project - I'm not much of a metal worker. Anyways, I've been really happy with it outside of the toe plate. Luckily my goal was 3 cords for this year.

I built this horiz/vert last year. Pull 2 pins and the trays come off for verticle splitting. 17 H.P. Kohler 22gpm 2 stage pump 5x24 cylinder with 3/4 inch ports and rated for a constant 3000 psi working pressure. Control valve is 3/4 inch ports also.

Very cool Eric. That thing looks like a monster,Ill bet it will take anything you throw at it. Looks good.

That looks awesome! Now to get some of that paint worn off. Probably is by now.

Here are a couple pics of mine, not near the machine that Eric or mx racer built. It started off life as an old p.o.s. Didier splitter, everything has been redesigned and built by me except the original beam/cylinder arrangement.

The horiz/vert configuration is the only way to go for me since my storage space is limited. Its suprising to see how small of a space this thing takes up when you flip the beam to the vertical position and remove the tongue.

Still it is slick. Nice job.

I like it. It does look like it would be pretty compact. Nice job:cheers:
