Looking for a heat shield tape to use in the place of the reflective foil that goes under the muffler of Stihl saws. Doing a restore and want the heat shield in place. Is is supposed to help protect the case gasket. The dealer said the foil is not available (maybe a crap shoot). There was a thread here years ago that had a tape type alternative. I used the search and could not locate it. Any ideas?

i use muffler tape for everything i want heat protected. i use it mostly on husky top covers where the stock muffler opening exits but have used it underneath the mufflers on stihls. seems to work fine.first application makes a guy think it would never stick good enough to stay but as soon as it get's hot it hardens up and sticks just like the reflective tape from stihl. also a compressed gasket won't just burn out from a bit of heat. i doubt it would burn out even if the muffler was in direct contact. i'm not sure what the reflective tape would be for otherwise but i doubt it is to "save" the case gasket.

Have a link or example of "muffler tape". Appreciate the post.

I'll have to get on the computer for that. Just in the shop with my phone. The difference between the muffler tape and the actual heat shield tape is the muffler tape has a fiber inlay for strength. The heat shield tape is basically thick tin foil for a sticky side. Here's a pic of my left over roll of muffler tape.

the insulated tape you speak of is the same as muffler tape. works good for me and i buy it for like $4 for a roll that lasts forever.

Actually heating duct tape will work, I just cut a bunch of pieces for my Ms 440 that was missing it. Sticks well and can be form fitted. Like 500-600 degree

Please inform me of the source of this tape you speak of. Thus far, I have not found any for less than $14.00 a roll. That is actually fine. I did locate a price on the precut foil -- I was told it was $6.00 plus tax. If I can buy a 15' roll of muffler tape -- for nor near twice that, I'm going for the roll.

The foil tape with red writing on it meets code for mechanical duct work. The stuff without any writing on front is about half price. Same or similar quality. Kinda like whether an oil meets fd specks or actually got tested

LOL my source is the local hardware store. it's in the tape section. i can't remember how many feet it was when i got it but i've used about half of it in 4 years i figure. i only use it for heat protection on saws. muffler on my truck is mint and it never sits so i don't expect it to ever need muffler tape :) i'll go see what ebay says and report back. i've never bought it anywhere online.

this is like the stuff i got only the roll i got is like half the size when new and is only $4+tax. almost puked when i saw the price of this stuff on ebay. if i was you i'd go check you hardware store tape section first. appears the seller on ebay think he can charge an arm and a leg because it is what he calls JDM tuner tape LOL. i've owned a JDM SR20 in a 240sx and i still wouldn't pay that price.
