Hi everyone, I'm new to the site and this is my first post, hope someone can help...... I'm pulling my hair out here! :bang: I'm helping a friend with an old Husqvarna 61 Rancher he aquired several years ago. the bar studs were broken so we split her apart and replaced them, while we had it apart we replaced the crank seals and the piston ring - it's now all back together but has no spark, the saw has been sitting and was not started for approx. 5 years, it had spark 5 years ago when it was put in storage. It seems strange to me that it would just quit sparking for no reason??? I'm a very experienced motorcycle mechanic but I don't know much about chainsaws, can anyone tell me the procedure for troubleshooting this ignition or offer any insight? is this a common problem with these saws? (It has a 2 piece pointless electronic ignition)
Many thanks in advance! Matt in KY

check

Did you check your grounds? And double check them? It sounds like your ignition to me, but I'd double check your ground to make sure it's not that, then get yourself a new ignition, upgrade it dude. Good luck. Gotta get spark before you can do anything else buddy. Also check your plug wire and your plug to make sure it isn't defective.

First, unplug the switch and check for spark. If no spark, then look for spark lead cut by cylinder fins.Still no spark, check continiuty on the wire from the transistor to the small coil, sometimes the terminal is held only by plastic over the wire, the wire being broken inside.Still no spark, then its probably the big one that is gone at 99.9 %.The small rarely goes bad.

Thanks for the info, when you say "upgrade it" what exactly do you mean? get an aftermarket ignition or newer husky parts or what?
Thanks, Matt in KY

Yea, if your going to go with a newer ignition, you might be able to slap one of the more current ignitions on it with very little mod. The newer ignitions are better anyways as I understand it...
