I managed to make it through the first 28 years of my life with only one saw. My trusty old 038 mag. I found and joined this site a month or so ago to help me sort out some questions I had about my 038 and a 272xp my grandpa had recently given me. I had so much fun tearing the 272xp apart, reading this forum and getting my saws going again I started looking for a new project. Well I went on a bit of a saw buying bender and now I need some advice and some opinions on how to proceed. Below is a list of what I have accumulated and what I currently know about them.

028 av- complete saw with b&c. Guy I bought it from claims it has 150psi compression and that the saw starts and runs great but then stalls, but will start right up again. I paid way to much for this project:bang::bang::bang:, rookie mistake. I am planning on selling it to fund more projects once running.

(1/2) 026- pretty much missing the entire top end of the saw, currently in lots of very dirty pieces, thinking about just parting it out on ebay.

026- practically complete powerhead, supposedly starts and runs with the help of started fluid, looks to be in great shape with little use.

(2) 031 complete powerheads, got a smoking deal on the pair. I believe one is electric and one is not.

09-came with the half 026, also currently in a lot of dirty pieces, probably needs new piston and cylinder.

So yea, I have accumulated 6 non-working saws in the last month, all are currently stashed in various places in my garage hiding from my wife! :hmm3grin2orange: Is this normal? I really need to start working on them, and probably sell a couple to help fund my new addiction. I really want to keep one 026 and one 031 as well as the 09. I just cant decide which saw to start working on first. I am torn between starting on the 028 and then selling it to fund my new addiction or starting on one of the 031 or 026 saws and keeping it. I do want to keep the first saw I rebuild. Right now I'm leaning towards starting with the 031's, getting one of them running and then parting out or selling the complete powerhead of the other. What are your thoughts? :msp_confused:Whatever saw I start with I will need lots of input from all you knowledgeable fellows as I am new to working on two strokes.

I would personally build the 026 to keep then build and sell the rest for future projects. What ever you do, stay out of the stickys, if you contract yellow or green fever there will be no hope.

you are not in deep enough yet to worry about sorting anything out yet.:msp_wink:

Good to know

Well that is good news. I am just feeling a little overwhelmed looking at the pile of saws in front of me. I am thinking I will start with the 026 though, thinking the 031s might be a bit more of a project than I really want to get into for my first attempt.

Someday soon Grasshopper you will realize :

that an 009 is not a saw, but a "throw in" to get you to take another saw away....

And that "parts of a saw" are not saws until you "invest" the time and money needed to make them saws...

The name 031 is code for "ignition problems"

Come sit with me by the fire....

I am ready to learn your ways master. That was why I started this thread, I figured I need to to stop buying saws I don't know much about and start working on saws. I was previously aware that 031/032s have a lot of ignition problems and parts are not all that easy or cheap to come by. But I have always wanted one, mostly because I think they just look cool. So what is the deal with the 009? Is it worth investing time or money into or should I just pass it along to some other greenhorn? :msp_confused:

Chuck 'em all, get some 10-10's and a Super 250
I could not agree more! nothing easier to tear down and build up than some classic american power, I prefer the yellow/black flavor, though the Red/Blue is growing on me. Creamsicle, I have one, but only because it was a freebie, and I needed a big saw to get into the 6 cube club (075)-though I do actually have a need for a big saw on the tree farm and for my milling needs.

Take them all apart, one project at a time(key*****) find out whats missing or needs replacing. Ask real nice( key*****) for help and parts you shall recieve...

Keep plenty of barter available :

Pie
Bacon
Chocolate
Beer

Once you get them all figured out you will have learned to start with saws you only want to keep as this is generally a hobby for most of us. Dont tell the wife that. (If shes just a GF then tell her to get some pie, bacon, beer or chocolate and share it with her)

Make sure you come back and "pay it forward" once you find the answers.

red/blue???

I'll keep that in mind, I had a yellow/black but was advised to junk it due to lack of parts available, so I sold it and opted for the Creamsicle route. In retrospect that was probably a mistake/learning opportunity:bang:. What is red/blue?

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. This is defiantly just a hobby for me. I'm not looking to make any money at this, just recoup some of my investment, not go broke and maybe end up with some cool saws out of the deal. I am looking forward to the day that I have learned enough to pay it forward for sure.

Fix the one needing the least first. Then go get more saws. Don't worry about what type, just get everything. Eventually you will have your own supply that you can use. Then you can use them for trading for other parts you need or you can pay it forward and help somebody else that really needs a certain part for a saw they are working on. Any way around it, just get more saws. That's the only way to feed the addiction.
