Answered this ad for free hickory on Craigslist and came up with this small load.
I did make friends with an old codger who showed me 3 more hickory tree's about 30 ft tall & 1 downed white oak about 25 ft...root-ball still intact, that I could have later on.

I'm not great on Hickory I.D. unless it's shagbark...
Is this a pignut, bitternut, red hickory or what?
Any help would be appreciated...it was surrounded by tons of huge black hulled & light brown interior nut!

Thanks
Reg

It's shagbark. Cut some a month or so and the limbs are identical. No shag on em but the base of the tree had plenty!

Nah, those are pine nuts. You don't want those, my furnace will burn pine just fine, send it up here.

we have shag bark hickory trees out back, some just 5" in diameter, and they have shag bark on them. it may be a hickory of some type but not shag bark.

oops! just read the last post. my bad.

It may be hard to say for certain on a small tree like that.
