Please excuse my newbie question....

I have owned a 031 AV for about 30 years. I love the old saw and really am not ready to give it up. I am "homeowner" and give it occassional use.

I have just purchased a used recoil assembly since the old one broke one time too many. It broke due to the saws hard starting over the years.

Well after a carb rebuild it wants to start but does not stay running very long. I am not sure that the carb was put together correctly.. I only copied the way it came apart. Hence, I would love to see an explded view of the way the factory says it should go back together so I can make sure the gaskets go on the main casting first followed by the diaphragms etc. The tillotson web site does not have a cross-sectional view for my old carb.

Can anyone help or send me a pointer to the right drawing or help me get this right???

Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the thought.. but my carb is not an HU and really doesn't look that that one. Is there an exploded view resident on the web anywhere else?

Thanks

about 1970 something 031 AV

Hmm.. If it's not an HU then what it it? There should be some tiny numbers on the carb body..

Gasket order...

Pump cover->gasket->pump diaphragm->carb body->GASKET->metering diaphragm->metering cover. Note the change from the metering side to the pump...

Sorry guys... I should have dug deeper. When I looked at the "HU Schematic" on line it looked all wrong. When I retrieve the print out of the copier the image from the trouble shooting page looks right on. I stand corrected, it must be the HU.

Me thinks I might have reversed order of the pump gasket and diaphragm ... need to go disassemble and see.

THANKS!

I love the old thing I have used since high school. Hopefully it will be worth getting right..

I need to purchase a second new saw anyway for my company and was looking at both the MS250 C-BE plastic thing or the MS 260 professional.

Care to give me advise? Magnesium or plastic? I love the old magnesium saws just don't know if it is a waste of money now that most things are plastic.

Thanks!
Danny

It's just a choice of how much money you want to spend... personally, I love the 260, it is pricey, but look after it and you can hand if if to your grandkids.

This is where the Dolmar and Husky guy leap in and tell you there are "other choices..":D

You guys are awesome!

I found the pumping diaphragm and gasket inverted and now it runs like champ.

After my new (used) ebay recoil mechanism gets here everything should be fine.

I still need to purchase a new additional saw. I would like a stihl as this one has served me well and I know where the dealer is and like the gent.

So it is a personal choice.. the plastic ones seems to hold up ok. I keep thinking the old school die cast machines are better... but cars are mostly plastic now too! I'll have a think about it. I suppose the $150 difference might be better longevity assuming all other things are the same.

Best!

happy 031..

I almost did the same thing when rebuilding the tilly on my old 031 two years ago. I had to go back to the two gaskets and look at the impressions from the carb body. Guessed right and got lucky. Runs like new again...maybe better than new with the rusted out (and subsequently removed) muffler internals...but man she is LOUD!
