A client has a 60' Tulip Poplar & a 10' Flowering Magnolia & both trees have leaves that turned yellow, then brown, then started falling off a few months ago. The neighbors trees looked fine. The Poplar is in the back yard, right next to a 50' Oak and the side of the Oak closest to the Poplar, the leaves have partly shriveled & are a paler green, not as healthy looking as the rest of the tree. The Magnolia was planted this spring and is in the front lawn, over 50' from the other 2 trees. Any ideas?

Pictures are always a good idea.

What chemicals have been sprayed or used on the lawn?

The tulip poplar is evidently noted for leaf yellowing and premature abscission due to inadequate water. Is this a possibility? It is troublesome though that the side of the oak next to the tulip poplar has shriveled and pale leaves (hence the previous question re chemicals).

The Magnolia could be also suffering from inadequate irrigation. But, these are basically guesses without pictures.

I would say the 2 problems are not related. 1- Due to the fact that the Oak is also showing symtoms, were these trees sprayed (pesticide) during the summer? A closeup of the affected leaves would help. Has there been any root disturbance in the root zone of these 2 trees? 2- magnolia appears to be in shock. Trunk suckering could indicate root death. This tree is very thin and photosynthesis has been reduced as a result.
