Hi all,

We are new to Nevada and this site. I need some advice as we have never had palm trees before.
As you can see by the photo we have two Mexican Fan Palms in the backyard. They are about 2-3 feet from the lower neighbors retaining wall.

We had a landscaper come in to do some work. He told us we need to get rid of the palms as they will cause problems with the lower neighbors retaining wall.

Do they have to be removed now or do we have a few years to enjoy them before we need to remove them? Will they damage the neighbors retaining wall either the roots or by the weight of the trees being so close?

We water for 10 minutes twice a day, one day a week. It is a drip system.

Thanks for any help you can give.
Barb Frederick

Yes the palm will out grow it's location. They are somewhat fast growing, however the root system is not aggressive. If you are in a windy area blow down is a concern being close to the retaining wall.

How tall is your neighbors retaining wall? Is it concrete block? Landscape timbers?
The retaining wall is actually what our fence is mounted on. See photos. The one on the left is looking down on the neighbors yard. The retaining wall is the concrete in the front with our fence on it. The photo on the right shows what the retaining wall looks like if we were on her side. This is a Del Webb community and the retaining walls were build by the builder in 2006. She has terraced her hard from the retaining wall down.

Thanks for your help.
Barb

Enjoy your new home, and your palms... nothing to worry about
