I bought a Silvey Razursharp II square ground chain grinder.

I have everything set-up and working just fine (including the wheel dressing screws in the back which was challenging to figure out!). I am going to love this grinder to say the least!

My only question is how can you grind opposite cutters on the chain the same amount? (So the "left" cutters are the same height and the "right" cutters?)

Would I use a micrometer to measure the cutters on the chain? What would I measure? (I've never sharpened chains with a grinder before, so would like to know how to do this right...)

FYI - This grinder sharpens "square ground" chainsaw cutters. To sharpen these manually you use a flat file (double bevel actually) instead of a round file. This grinder has two sides with separate adjustments. So you would sharpen the "left" cutters on one side. Then sharpen the "right" cutters on the other side. So the left side for example could be set to grind off more of the cutter head than the right side (I assume???)

I don't know about the razor-sharp II, but my swing arm grinder set's up on both sides too. I use a set of calipers to get the teeth the same length, make sure the corners are right, etc. etc.
I'm sure there's a better way. I'm all ears.

I called the company and they said they had a more detailed instruction manual for beginning grinders. They said they mostly sell to people who already know all this stuff. Anyway they sent me the manual.

In the manual it says to just reach down and bring the bottom of the chain up and hold up an opposite cutter to the cutter you have just ground to see if it is the same size.

I tried this yesterday and it works quite well. Easier than using calipers.
