Hi, everyone. Just an update on the old Dissston saw. Mark this day down in history. This morning at 11:00 AM, I fueled up the old Disston, opened up the cold start valve and set the start run lever to run, locked the throttle open, pulled on the recoil and on the 4th pull she took off. Closed the cold start valve and she continued to run. Ran rich, but ran. I moved the start run lever to run and it seemed to run a bit better. Will have to tinker with the fuel meter, some more. I then purposely shut her off, gave the recoil another pull and she took off again. Music to my ears. The saw hasn't started or been ran since 1960. A note to Scott Mueller, ran the saw for about 15 or so minutes and didn't see any gas/oil mix squrting from the vent on the gearcase. Guess the O rings on the impeller shaft are working at present. Was raining this morning and was running the saw in my garage. Had my wife take a picture of me and the saw in a cloud of smoke. Hopefully the sun will be out this afernoon and I'll get a chance to tinker with the fuel meter some more. Would like to thank everyone for their emails, advice and words of encouragement. Lewis.

After some more tinkering.

After some more tinkering, I managed to lean down the high speed side a bit and the saw now will start and rev up pretty good. Still smokes like crazy, a 16:1 mix. but don't want to lean her down too much. At first the saw would not idle. and I turned in another needle valve a bit and lol and behold it now idles for a few minutes before quitting. I have the fuel/oil mix draining now. I have a fuel leak. I think the line from the fuel meter to the tank is leaking at the fuel meter. It's either loosened up or the fiber washer is cracked and seeping. It's minor, to say the least. Probably will fix that, tinker with it some more, and eventually get it cleaned up and painted. OK, gotta go for now, everyone take care. Lewis.

Now we need some pictures! I wonder if you can't lean that mixture out to 32:1. I've seen some places where the manuals called for straight 30W @16:1 and that's downright scary, so I'm sure that good two-cycle stuff can be run thinner. Better safe than sorry though.

Hi, to cbfarmall.

Yes,I agree that the oil to fuel ratio could be changed. What I mixed up was 30w. Quakerstate 2 cycle oil at a 16:1 mix. I have an email out to my wife's relatives in Syracuse, NY and they said they would see if they could find the Mobil MX2T oil I'm looking for at the North Syr. Autozone. The fuel leak, was the line between the fuel meter and the tank. It was full of small cracks and I suppose the fuel was seeping though it. Replaced it with another that I had from another fuel meter. Will fuel her up and tinker with it some more later. Just glad to get her running as well as she does for now. I emailed, David Cooper, he's the son of the old fellow, who gave me the saw. He said that he was pleased that I got it running after all this time. Also said he would let his Mom, sister and brother know about the saw. I have been keeping him informed about the saw from the start.

I plan to mix the MX2T Mobil oil at a 32:1 mix and use it for all my 2 cycle equipment. OK, got to go, thanks for the reply and will let everyone know what's happening. Speaking of pictures, I have just finished a roll of film and it's being developed. As soon as I get them back, I'll put them on the computer and post a couple. Thanks again, Lewis.
