Hi Everyone, just wanted to say hey in my first post. I am new to the site and look forward to conversing with everyone. I am 20, and live in Cohocton, NY. I own a firewood business- BW Firewood Suppliers, and am looking to expand into tree service work hence my reason for joining the boards here. I have quite a bit of felling experience, but zero climbing experience as of now. From what I've been reading I'm getting psyched to learn and start. It amazes me how many other people love trees, and to think that I thought I was weird! I look forward to getting to know everyone. Have a good one- Ben Wolcott:newbie:

Hi, this site is an amazing mix of priceless informations given for free by guys with vast knowledge and experience side by side with ridiculous and hilarious stuff. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do.

Welcome to the sight. and have some fun while you're here. 30 years ago I started my own journey into the trees, ain't finished learning yet. Good luck to you, and be safe. Learn a lot before you start climbing, and even more later. Right now I would recommend either the arbomaster videos, (I have heard they are quite informational,) or you find someone who would help train you. Climbing is an art, skill, and an overwhelming rush of adrenaline. If you really want to be good, and give your customers what they pay for, learn all you can from many sources. There are some great books available, The Tree Climber's Companion, being one of them, but even then...find an instructor of some type.

I wish these resources had been available to me when I started out.

For the most part, people in here are pretty good about sharing information, and most of them seem to be relatively good people. Tree work, however seems to draw a colorful type of person to the profession, so you may have to wade through a few egos to get the information you need. We are all a bunch of ego-maniacs, but the ones who have done it for awhile know how to temper their self-absorption with modesty. Most of the old timers in this profession know they never lasted this long without a little luck.

So good luck to you, and welcome to the sight.

I've only been here a few days, and I have already really gotten this same "ego" vibe. What's up with that? Just curious if there was anything behind it?

Welcome Ben

Hay Ben
Great site here lots of info to be had.
Tuff braking into tree work around here. Everyone has a saw or two, but give it some time it'll work out.
Lot's of saw fever at the ArboristSite. Before you know it you'll own or want every saw at talked about here.

You shoulda been here a few years ago. It was really bad. Noobies were almost afraid to step up and ask questions as they'd get flamed, called idiots, etc. Cussing and ill language was commonplace and noobs would see this, think it was the norm and they'd come on as bad as the original pottymouths. This sorta thing polluted this site and an 'environmental task force' was enacted to clean up the mess.

A lot less of that happens these days. Moderators are on watch and violators get a red dot or eventually banned. The guys who are genuinely here to contribute and share and learn make up the bulk of this site, but egos do eek through, but that's just part of the color here.

If someone is out of line, they can be reported, or you can call them out right in the thread. The behavior here is very clean compared to years ago.

ben, welcome. i am new (to the site) as you and find a very classy dignified forum w a formidable group protecting the truth (the truth is the truth) with plenty of fun and learning and teaching. what more could you poss need. quite addictive. good luck (treeman s luck) and along w all the good info you have gotten in prior posts it wouldn t hurt to take an apprenticeship (job) w a good tree service for a year at least and in return for all you learn give him loyal and honest and diligent work for that time. when you leave neither of you owes the other anything.

A really good tree surgeon defies the laws of gravity, he can make flying at dangerous heights seem routine, a great tree surgeon can make things happen in a tree that are unimaginable to most, even those in the profession. These feats are achieved through immense self confidence and in many cases a certain arrogance, this self confidence can sometimes be portrayed as an ego and in some cases if gone unchecked what was once an extreme confidence can become an egotistical nature.

diltree said it best, at least what I was trying to say.
This profession draws people who have a LOT of self confidence..self assurance...and sometimes just plain SELF. MYSELF included. So if you are afraid to get your feathers ruffled, read much and say little...but if you want answers, ask much...and people will share.
It is in the nature of the profession to share our knowledge with others. Its our way of "showing off" even after the work day.
Most of these people in here love to help in anyway they can, (just don't ask them to be humble about it.)
Except for me...I am Terribly humble..as a matter of fact it is my only fault.

You guys all seem great, thanx for the welcome. I look forward to being a part of the site, and of tree work in general.
