Just wanted to introduce myself as I have been lurking around these forums for a while and figured it was time to post.

After clearing about an acre of land this fall, I started messing with the trees. I ended up with about 13 cords of hardwood, 5 of which I sold wholesale to a local farmer (basically covered chain and gas cost, and it cleaned up my mess while I prepared for the heavy equipment. So right not I am sitting on about 8 cords or so...

Staring at the cut (not split) and stacked cords, I started shopping woodstoves and OWB's to heat my house, which is about 3000 square feet. I figured I have so much wood available to me (over 50 acres), I may as well ditch the propane guy and heat on wood. Decided on the woodstove, a Hearthstone Equinox, main deterrent from the OWB was that if power should go out (which it does a bit here in the sticks), I will still have heat with a woodstove.

Next enter a need for a splitter after hacking away at the wood for a few hours with a maul. Just picked up a 22T Huskee from TSC based on the good reviews I found on this site. My other option was a Iron and Oak 20T, but I figured I'd save the money and put it towards the stove since thats a pretty big chunk of change.

Today I took my Simplicity snowblower down to the local shop and traded it in for an Echo CS-680 saw. Big machine, much bigger than the CS-400 I run now. Considered Husqvarna but the other equipment (blower, wacker) and saws I own are Echo, and over the last 5 years, they all still start on the first pull. I also like the 5 yr warranty vs the 2 on the Husqvarna.

Anyway...I think I'm becoming obsessed with the wood. I can never wait to get outside and get workin'!

I appreciate this website and hope to participate and learn from the many others here. Talk to you all soon!

I thought about a generator but then I saw my fathers propane bill when we lost power for a few days! :waaaht:

Welcome, If your going to hang around let me fill you in on some ground rules.
Spending. 2-3K a year on firewood toys gets you in the door. 4-5K gets you in the noticed section and 6K and over lands you in the "wish I was him" top level.
Extra points are given for cool woodsheds, brand new diesel 4x4 pic up trucks, ( New darn it! not old ones!) Dump trailers and splitters as long as they are 6 way and larger. Wedges and sledge hammers get 50 point deduct while anything European gets you 50 extra.
Fiskars is old news so they dont count.

Forget anything??

Cost me about $80 worth of gas the last time it was out for 4 days here, hell of a lot cheaper than loosing 2 freezers full of meat! Not to mention the queen sniveling about no running water

Welcome. Don't tell some of the drooling, knuckledragging saw nuts that you chose Echo over Husky, they'll have a cow. From the little I've run em, the Echos are nice saws, and more than plenty for any firewooder's use.

Keep in mind a longstanding rule here in Firewood, WE NEED PICS! Heck, I bought a second digital camera just to have one in the truck. (And that fit in my pocket, my other one is too big for that.)

Welcome!
You must be warned: This site will give you a terribly expensive disease: CAD. Difficult to cure but you will lean to live with it.
How many chainsaws do I have? No idea...
You will nevertheless find tons of useful info and meet plenty of great people.

Once I get my wood split and stacked, Ill post some pics of the place. Im thinking about making a Holz Hausen...my only problem is I dont cut to a precise length, so it may be a bit sloppier than this one.

out of curiosity, how far do you guys like to keep the wood from your house? I was hoping to stack it off my pathway around the back of my house, but that would put it about 20' from the actual house. Dont want critters hopping from the pile and trying to make my home their new one.

Welcome to AS. There is a lot of great info from great people on this site, don't be afraid to ask. Oh and I hope you have a lot of money cause it can get expensive hanging around here!! Lots of addictions disorders to catch here

Welcome to the asylum. Sounds like you've got a lock on your woodlot already. Good deal.

We started burning last winter. Our stacks are around 15 feet and more from the house. I built the first stack close to the door for the sake of convenience but won't be doing that again. Too easy for termites and other assorted sundries to get in.

Enjoy your travels at AS. :)
