hickory for timber

Hickory makes beautiful lumber. When you buy Pecan lumber chances are you are actually buying Hickory ( same family). If I had trees like what you're talking about I would look for a veneer log buyer. Check with you county forester. Check your PM.

Outfit I used to work for shipped their veneer logs to some place in Kentucky. Had to pay good cause sometimes they would only take a couple of logs at a time on a big truck. I'm sure someone here knows of a veneer mill.

so this is fine finish, rather than standard framing wood timber .. it sounds like.. ill have to do a lot more study on marketing it .. but its probably a go.. any other info appreciated.. hanks

Here in S. Ontario, log buyers never get very exited about Hickory veneer, it splits too easily, especially in the warmer months.
If it is shagbark hickory it is in demand for lacrosse sticks. Generaly, hickory is a good utility grade wood used for implement handles, snowshoes, tobaggans , skiis and sled runners, much like Ash would be used, but as Scott noted it makes beautiful lumber, especially cupboards.

Also, if it is shagbark, keep in mind that it is notoriously tough on bandsaw blades. If he's looking for machinery to saw it up, circular saw will cut it a lot better. Many folks with woodmizers and other such bandmills will not cut shagbark.

so some think selling mite be a disappointment tob me..my takeon what was said.. is barbecue houses the way or they just no money..thanks
it sure be a shamed to burn it strait as it is.. less they wanted to keep me in pork shoulders an i could sell barbecue at the fleas er sompin.. thanks
john lookin forward to the pics

Tony, the pallet mill I deliver to only allows me to have 10% of a load in hickory because it is hard on saws. However if you have really nice trees with clear boles and are round and not oval or some other weird undesirable shape then they may be worth cutting. The veneer mill I occasionally haul to paid $1,100 per lbf on the doyle scale last time I hauled. Are you near Liberty north carolina? If so there is a saw mill down there that also buys veneer and high grade logs, you should look in to that.

Tony, do you know what kind of hickory it is? I believe the shagbark and shellbark are used mostly for tool handles, and the "red" hickories ( mockernut, bitternut, pignut ) are more like pecan ( also a hickory as mentioned earlier. ) These are the ones that go more to veneer or hardwood mills. They are easier on saws as well. For shag or shell, you might try finding a handle manufacturer. They're still around. Also try inquiring with your state forestry service?

yea this aint shag.. pretty sure its pig.
pretty bark.. if aint good toimber its a shame.. strait forest grown .. reachiing for the moon.no limbs much under 30-40 ft..we ll see. not like its enough to turn a world around, but sure impressive..and in reality it time to harvest it..lake or no..
thanks

thanks bud.. second wouldnt load ,,yet but i need all info i can get.. this ole puter getting like me.. but it aint but 5-6 yrs old .:) :)

I had to try it twice. Second time I went down, got a cup of coffee, stoked the fire, etc, let it do its thing. Came back and it was fine. Sometimes these old computers just need some time to themselves.:D
