Hi, I recently blew the motor on my 252 and replaced it with a 44hp. I know thats a little high, but it seems i always end up using it instead of the tow behind bc of portability. Anyone use a setup like this for an extended period of time? any issues? The only thing I've noticed so for is when the teeth get dull the engine has enough power to walk over the stump when grinding... Not pretty!!
Thanks

Mine has nitrous and a turbo with a standalone engine management system. I don't even bother cutting the tree down before the stump anymore.

In reality, the machine's chassis was designed for the 27hp motor, not 44hp. you'll risk prematurely wearing out the drive line, all the welds and bearings etc. Cool mod though LOL....

ya i realized that may be the case but was kinda wondering how over enginneered they were.I have a new driveline on it so I guess I'm the guinnea pig! you should see her cut though!

Over-engineered? not likely, that's what the 352 is for......

When Carlton began putting the larger engines on their 2500-4 (7015) frame they quickly found the jack shaft and cutter wheel bearings couldn't handle the extra torque, and consistently failed very prematurely. When the machines reached full production the jack shaft diameter had been increased and larger pillow block bearings where used. I run carlton and vermeer but recognize the carlton machines are much heavier built than the vermeers. You should anticipate significant problems with the bearing and shafts, and probably the main frame and weldments.

How about posting a picture of the machine, so we can see how it looks with that tractor engine on top.

What kind of engine did you put on? Gasoline I assume?
Are you still using the factory clutch and belt systems?

Several guys on here have put 35hp Vanguard's on their 252's, me included just last month, and they seem to hold up just fine. At Plyscamp's suggestion I did upgrade the jackshaft to 1.5". I think that's the only mod he did and it has been in operation w/o any problems for three years now.

Mine cuts like a beast compared to the 25hp that was on it. And if you don't abuse it it's a whole lot cheaper than $18K or so for a factory 35hp Carlton, which, if I was going that route, would go with the 44hp diesel 4012.
