Got my new 24" orange GB bar from the UPS guy the other day . I ordered it from one of our members - jsikkeema. Fast shipping, great transaction.

The bar looks stunning on my MS440, especially with the new dawgs I put on last month. Thanks jsi. You know your stuff.

Now for the question: I've never dealt with 063 guage chain before. The new Stihl chains I bought to fit it have round holes in the center of the drivelinks. What purpose does this serve?

I'll be cutting with the new setup this Saturday. I'll post after I do so.

My birthday is next month. Hopefully it will yield a digital camera. Or better yet, another saw!

The holes are to hold oil even when slinging around the tip of the bar. If you look closely, you will see grooves in the drive teeth connecting the holes to the rivets. I dunno how it works, all I know is that Stihl chain lasts me about 2x as long as any other chain I have used. It doesn't get as hot, therefore it doesn't stretch as much.
I can't remember the last time I ran out of adjustment on a chain, requiring removing a link or throwing away a chain with usable teeth on it. (I believe that removing a link on a stretched chain just increases wear on the sprocket, cause the drivers are farther apart than the sprocket teeth)

High Life Man...

Thanks for the update...
I would like to see some pics of that saw with the orange GB bar I sent you...

that is a sweet looking bar, Almost would hate to use it though, wouldnt want to ruin the paint job. Nice show bar :D . Hey, um.. where would i have to go to find one of them thar pretty lookin thangs.

Confused,

Look in the member list for jsikkeema. I ordered mine from him. I think his email option is on. Or you can do a search using the keywords "orange" or "guide" to find the thread with the info. Square deal.

I bought the bar because it is one piece construction, not laminated. It's very stiff, but noticeably heavier. That bar costs roughly the same including shipping as a laminated Stihl bar of the same length, which I've found to be quite flimsy.

As for the paint, all my saws are working saws. I take care of them but do not baby them. The powdercoat looks pretty thick. It should look good for a long time.

I just got some stihl chain for my 020's yesterday and the holes are in the drivers on them too? At almost $19 each I'll order some oregon chain for my next sets!!!

The holes are to hold more bar oil and to limit the amount of streching. Todd what size 020 chains. 12, 14, 16, or 18? Should usually be .30 a drive link.

jsikkema1, those bars look great, how long does the paint last? Bars I've used in the past, they were so scuffed up after one day, it really didn't matter what they said?

The 44 got a decent workout yesterday while sporting the new 24" orange GB bar.

For flush cutting stumps the stiff bar is the ticket. The saw doesn't spiral in the cut because the bar has so little flex.

I firmly believe that 24" is the perfect size for the 44. After a field sharpening I did some bucking with it as well. That extra 4" saves alot of bending over. The 20" bar I've been running puts the operator at an akward position to buck a log on the ground. I also have a 32" bar for that saw but have only used it twice. With 24" of chisel chain the saw seems very happy and versatile.

As for the paint, a considerable amount has already worn off, but I think it looks better that way. Sort of Mad Max.

I've got a 24" on my 044 too seems perfect and keep the 32" on my 066.
Darin this was for a 14" bar 50 links, guess they were charging me .37 a link. This is a new shop I've been checking out, between this and it taking more than a month to get some rings, they're not cutting it yet:angry:
