Homelite 707 G

Hello everyone,
I'm thinking of 'modernizing' my Homelite 707 G. Finding bars and chains is becoming quite difficult. I was wondering if anyone has converted their 1/2" spur sprocket to a .404 spur or spline and rim? If so, was the sprocket custom made? I noticed that bantasaw has some that look promising...any thoughts?
Would also appreciate any leads to replace my 1/2" Oregon 10 chain and bar. Thanks.

Homelite part number 70353 should do it, though I am under the impression they are rare to find, and if that is a hardnose bar it does not care what pitch chain you run on it.

I was wondering if this will work: Banta Saw - Small Engine Parts and Accessories It has the 707 D listed as a match....not sure if the the shaft/key combo is the same on both saws... I assume they are

Roller nose bars have no teeth in them so as long as the chain is the same width as the bar, in most cases .063 gauge, you can run .404 in them and hard nose bars. The McCulloch .404 gear drive sprocket will fit on the shaft but you have to shave down the key, I will be looking for some NOS .404 sprockets later this week. That sprocket will not work on a gear drive Homie only a direct drive one.

I haven't looked to see what kind of sprocket my Zip has on it but someone in the past converted it to 3/8, roller nose bar and all.

You should switch it back to .404 as Homelite intended, will pull it just fine. If it is a true roller nose and not a sprocket tip you can run the .404 on it as it is .063 gauge, they made 3/8, .404, and 1/2 all in .063 gauge so all you need to do is switch out the sprocket on the saw. My 995G runs 1/2 inch on a 40 inch roller nose bar, I use the same bar with .404 on my 770D.

The McCulloch .404 gear drive sprocket will fit on the shaft but you have to shave down the key, I will be looking for some NOS .404 sprockets later this week.

No, it will not fit. The Mac sprocket will fit the 995G (and the rest of that family). The 707G sprocket is 1/32" larger diameter. You have to fight the 1130G and 3100G guys to find the correct gear.

If you can bore the Mac sprocket, then you can make it fit. Good luck with that.

So, let me see if I have this straight:
-I can use a hard nose or roller nose bar as long as the chain gauge and bar rail width are the same. Pitch becomes irrelevant.

-I would need to do some machining for the McCulloch .404 to fit.

Any chance of a part number for the McCulloch spur? (is this part any easier to find than the Homelite 70353?) :bang:

As gear drive saws were made to multiply torque and allow longer bars for the felling of bigger wood, it seems to me that to change to a smaller tooth without speeding up the sprocket accordingly would be to diminish the cutting speed of the saw. JMO

I still have the 1/2" chain set up on my 770G since it is a brand new chain with only 3 cuts on it.

The chain is still in decent shape. Just planning on the future. Would love to be able to find some chain and leave the saw 'stock'. Yet, I would rather convert it, than make it obsolete. :chainsawguy:
