Hey all. Who can tell me something about this saw other than what is on Mikes site? Was it a good saw? Is the geared reduction version more rare than the direct drive version? How reliable is the geared drives? Also, what about Oregon type 32 chain. I believe it is 1/2" but know nothing else about it.
Thanks

I think that the 990G is one of the coolest looking saws from the 60's. I have one and like it. Not much to dislike about a unstoppable 9 hp gear drive saw. I use it for fun every once and awhile. Not a saw to use daily, 27 pounds w/o bar and chain! The saw has a unique feel to it, has manual oilers on both side of the handle, typical manual oilers are on the left, to be used by the operators right thumb. Mine has a 38" bar with 9/16" chain, oregon #4 I believe. I believe the gear drive units are very dependable if maintained properly, (check oil).

990G

Here is my old beast. It still runs pretty good. It doesn't look like it was ever used much.

I bought a 990d this summer to compete in our vintage direct drive class at the Baraboo show. Haven't started it yet. I don't expect it will beat Steve's 090, but should be fun to run. I have a video of a 9-27 making a cut at Baraboo 2003. Will post it when I get time.

Hi, Scott.

Hi, Scott. Have not seen you on here in a while. I have aquired an old Homlite, model 600 D, chainsaw, S/N 1053327. The engine looks great. but needs a muffler and carb kit, which I will order monday through [email protected]. Can't believe it's a 5.01 cu. in. saw. It has almost the same cubes as my old Disston, D0-101, at 5.50 cubes. The bar is an old beaver tail and is worn pretty bad, but I may have a place to send it to get it reground and regrooved. Unless I can come up with some sort of replacement bar. The sprocket and chain look to be in good shape. The chain is 58 links of 7/16 pitch, .063 gauge. The bar is about 19" long and the chain adjuster is out to its max. limit. I'm thinking that the chain can be shortened by one drive link, but don't know if I'll need chain parts(new rivets) to shorten it. Never got into, or have done any chain repaires. Will have to check the local hardware stores to see if I can purchase tools to shorten the chain. Madsens1.com has a vicegrip type tool to do chain repairs, but thought I would check locally first. Hey. did you ever get the fuel meter on the old Disston repaired with the "O'' ring trick I told you about? Good to see you back on, OK, you take care. Lewis. Merry Christmas to all here on the AbroristSite.

Here's the video. The first clip is the 9-27 gear drive. The second clip is a 995d. Both clips are on the same quicktime video. Both are from the old saw contest at Baraboo WI Aug, 2003.

Hi. Scott. For some reason Windows will not let me open your video clips. I have a quicktime player on my computer, but still cannot open your file.
I have the Homilite, 600 D, back to running condition. Here are a few pictures.

Messed up again.

The last one was of my Disston, D0-101. restored and painted to running condition. Still lack the engine decals. Here's the last pic. of the Homelite.

If anyone else has trouble opening the video clip, let me know. I have an apple computer, but it should be in a format pc's can open too. I'd hate to have people downloading a big file like this, only to have it not work.

Hi, Scott, I went to the web and tried to download the Quicktime Player download for Windows 2000 and XP. I've tried to download it several times, but it gets to a Quit part of the download and apparently, there is some sort of error in the windows program that will not let me download the Quicktime program. Will check out winlows update and other windows software to see if I can get a patch or driver, etc. to correct the problem. Lewis.

OK, Scott. Good Clip. Managed to download a Quicktime version that seems to work. Think it will work for now unless I have problems with it. Downloaded Quicktime once before and it slowed the PC down, so I removed it. Take care. Lewis.
