Was looking for some info on the homelite super xl and 1050 chainsaws. I would like to know the pros and cons of these saws as well as any other information. Have a xl-12 that is currently in use and runs great. Just finished giving it a cleaning overhaul. Would be using 3 super xl's for thinning operations and the 1050 for some serious firewood cutting! Haven't quite got them yet, and I would like to know more before I looked into buying. Thanks

I've got a Super XL and love it. For "real" work, though there are a few things to consider. The first is that they have no modern safety features. Okay for a saw used by an experienced person on an occasional basis, but not so good for a daily user when you factor in fatigue. Lawsuit waiting to happen. Although I haven't experienced it myself, the XL12/SXL have a tendency to boil the gas during extended use.

If you are going to have other people use the saws, I think you would be much better off with a more modern saw with a chain brake and other saftey features. Sure SXLs are pretty cheap, and great saws on top of that, but they aren't the kind of saws you want to run with hired help.

Dad ended up purchasing a Shindaiwa 488, and it is a real good saw with the metal clutch cover, but nothing compares to those old homelites though.
