What other saws were made around the time of my Super Mini SL and also might have been available with chain brakes ?
By chance does anyone here have a sales catalog from that era (1978-80 ?) ?

Brian if you call Riverside pumps and ask to talk to Tom he can feel you in on any info history Homelite and Textron had back then since he use to be at Homelite when homelite was in Charlotte NC which put it back in that time frame.

He may have the catalog you ask about also
I do have a catalog that dont have pictures in it but shows the list of items they made with models back then

I was wondering about Homelite history too. As far as Textron, they were just a holding company. Another one of their larger cash cows besides Homelite was lycomming Aviation Co. And as far as I know Lycomming is still owned by Textron.

Brian,
There were a bunch of the 70' and 80's Homelites with chain brakes. Most were designated with "SL". The 350/360, 450/550, and 650/750 all had an optional brake. 330 and 410s had it optional, and they were standard on 540/8800s. Even the Super 2 had an optional brake! Hope this helps a bit.

Thats what I was looking for. Thanks !
Now that I know a chain brake was avail. for the 550 I may have to get the one from my buddy.
I may have to trade him my 024 AVS, though. Dumb move ????

No that's a great move. You can pick up 024,025,026 saws every day of the week on CL and ebay. But you cannot get a 550 very often. I know wee talked before but if he gets rid of it and you don't want it put me on the list.

550s are great saws. Don't play with Stihls much here, but sounds like a great trade to me. The brake units are out there for them, but they're a bit harder to find than the saws. Not as hard as an auto oiler or gear unit for an XP/C series :), but still, it may take awhile to find one.

I wasn't interested in it because no chain brake so I was trying to get him to trade/sell to one of you guys. I got him some good offers from here but he's always very indecisive.
I don't know if he'll even want my 024 but I don't really have cash to offer him.
I'll keep you posted.

Here's the part numbers for a 550 chain brake kit.

As is Cessna. Which is why you won't see any new Cessna's running around with Continental engines.

Anyone know what a full lineup at a dealer would have looked like in 1978-80 ?
Something like: Super 2, SMXL, SXL, 240, 340,... ?
I'd love to see a catalog.

Textron owns Cessna so Continental has been SOL. I started out working on Cessna's with Continentals, so I am more familiar with them. Lycomming has a rich history and good products, although I don't think their sodium filled exhaust valves were a great idea. The only exposure I had to Lycomming engines was in the Cessna 172's and a Bell 47.

Still....nothing is quite as nice as a TGIO 540 at full rev!!!! Well two on a Cessna 421 is quite the auditory experience!!!! JJuday.

Ever heard a C/W 3350 at full song. Try four of them. Hows about P/W 4360 at full song, all six of them. I've heard the 3350's, never heard the 4360's. Would love to go back in time to the recip days of aviation when just running the valves on one engine took all :censored: day.

I got to see a P-38 that Danny King restored about 2 years ago and it was sweet, espically the counter-rotating twin Allison VT-1710's. Some of the older Beech's with P&W radials are a sight and sound to sav the soul! I also get a kick out of my neighbor and his Thrush turboprop cropduster, powerlines be-ware. King Air's have that angry bee sound that is neat to hear too.

Hello,
I have a few 8800's which don't have chain brakes, I wonder why?

Jonathan , Here's my 3 guesses....
1. The brake was gutted. Who needs them stinkin' chain brakes anyways :).
2. Demo saw cover.... hmmm, wonder if these would fit???
3. Rare version without a chain brake. Now this would be cool if there was Homelite without a brake that was harder to find than one with a brake!

Dan

Hey Dan,
It wasn't gutted since I bought it new. It is not the MP-88 cover because the hand guard part of the brake is connected, just a quick glance and you would think it would have a brake. The inside of the cover is empty, the hand guard is pretty much riveted into place, no band, no spring and no linkage. Must be a few odd ball ones I have!
