Also did you check reed? End play on crank?
Yes, I've checked the reed valve assembly. I didn't check the end play on the crank since I've used different engines. I still think the trouble is not having a decent carb. I put together a Tillotson carb today with a new kit but something's wrong with it also, it failed the inlet pressure test. It's almost like the inlet valve isn't there but it is. I tried stretching the spring, changing the inlet needle and it's still the same. I'll have to take it apart and investigate the problem.

Didn't know you used different engines. Sorry! Was trying to see if you had air leak into crankcase. As you probably know, carb won't work properly, if you do. Also, if you used the China made carb kits, the nub in diaphragm are too high. Sounds like you have checked for most common problems. If I remember correctly, there is a good video on You Tube about 2 stoke engines that will only run with choke on. Posted by TheRepairSpecialist

I haven't used any China made kits in my carbs yet. I tried rebuilding a Tillotson carb to try later on the saw, it was a Stens kit and didn't fit very well, causing an air leak. I ended up using some of the old parts instead. Maybe some of Stens stuff is now made in China?

I put the Tillotson carb on the XL but it didn't run very well either. I got the bright idea of tinkering with the ignition system just in case. I ended up removing the points and condenser and installing the points eliminator kit. I made a slight mistake of gluing it to the inside bottom of the case before I realized I might have to remove the engine in the future and that would be in the way. Guess I can always chisel it off.
