Hello all. Someone just sold me a Homelite XL1 automatic with the original case for 25$. I have been trying to find out anything I can about it but have come up with nothing. I looked in an Intertec manual which shows many Homelites but for some reason, there is no XL1. Does anyone know anything about this saw such as displacement, weight, known problems, etc. Are parts still available for this saw? I hope someone can help me. Thanks.

Boy, that's one you don't hear about too often. I'm pretty sure it's the same thing as the Super EZ, so the manual for that should work. It's a high-compression 2.5CD saw from the early '70s. Terrific power output for the size. High octange gas at a 32:1 mixture is my favorite for the little killer saws from back then.

Here's what Mike's site has to say:

Thanks for the reply. I was looking at Mike Acres' site and the Super EZ has a displacement of 40.9 cc and my XL1 has 41.2 cc. Does this mean it is not the same as the Super EZ?

They wouldn't be identical internally, but the procedure would be the same. Some of the other Homelite guys here should be able to elaborate on that, and give you parts sources.

I don't have the service instructions for each, side by side, but both do have the same bore nad stroke (1-9/16 x 1-5/16). This works out to 2.52 cu in, or 41.2 cc.

I'm not trying to pick a fight with Mr Acres, but perhaps there is a typo on his site. There was also an EZ 250 about this time that sure seemed to be the same saw. I think Homely-lite had a bunch of experimentaion going on with marketing back then...they were beginning to really steam their old faithful dealers with back-door deals to a few stores and saws showing up in the chains at about dealer cost.

Local chain saw dealer got really upset years ago when he saw a big splashy ad for one of those teapot saws at about $3 less than his dealer cost years ago...only difference between chain store and his display unit was the decal on the recoil cover. His response was to refuse to place any more whole goods orders.

I just picked up an XL1 and discovered there is no information after much research. Could you share with me what you learned? Thx.

The XL1 is the Canadian version of the Super EZ. Most parts interchange. The biggest differences between the two is the SEZ has a compression release and auto/manual oiling. XL1 no compression release and auto oiling only.
Terrific, thanks. Now I just need to find a Homelite 5/8's combination wrench (T tool) for the sparkplug and bar nuts.

The Canadian model is very similar but no chrome... I think mine was made in the last couple of years i.e. 1986 Here is a link with a video of the one I picked up...

May aswell continue the old thread again. I picked up an old blue xl-1 for $10 a couple weeks back. Simple carb/filters cleaning/tuning and runs good. But badly needs a new bar.
This one has a compression release and manual oiler though, which contradicts most of my research on it so far. Any tips?

No other markings on the saw, besides a hand engraved serial number I think...

The XL-1 like the EZ models covered many years, both saws started in blue, maybe in the late 60's early 70s, it appears early versions were manual oiler only or there were two versions. Later versions offered Auto oiler and compression release. Late 70's to early 80's models started using a plastic recoil cover instead of the metal screen. Early versions (69-71) claim 37.6 cc for EZ and XL-1 manual oilers, and later versions claim between 40.9 cc for Super EZ and SEZAO, 41 cc for Super Mini Sl Automatics, and 41.2 for XL-1 Automatics. These are not my numbers, just numbers from Homelite and Homelite related websites, but they sound fairly plausible.

Haven't even made it home with it yet.. LOL
Last ran 5 years ago, might have oiler problems.

It would b nice to know if this XL-1 is the sane cc and build as the Super EZ Automatic of the 1970's, it sure looks like it, but Terry Ind built Homelites for the Canadian market and that often involved a number of changes, whether or not displacement, carb, or engine was the same remains a mystery.
