I'm sure you have all heard it before, but this one hit close to home. Two years ago I removed a dead pine tree from my uncles yard. So he knows who to call if he needs tree work done, I thought. Yesterday, he climbed three feet high in a tree on a ladder, yes, to trim a few limbs. He is 62 years old. A cut limb swung down, knocked the ladder out from under him, and he landed hard, arms and face first. He snapped both arms off at the wrist, smashed his nose to mush, broke out multiple teeth, and tons of bruises. He cannot eat or use the restroom on his own, so my aunts job is in jepordy because she must be with him constantly. I'm not sure what else to say here. Tree pros, safety first. And homeowners, Please consider hiring a professional for your tree work. I would have trimmed my uncles tree in about fifteen minutes for free if I'd have known. Good morning.

Oh that's terrible. It really hurts to see people who are stubborn, and think they can do it and fall victim to an accident. It's really sad.

Thought I might share a similar story of my own.

Anyway, about 5 mins drive from my parents place two property owners were having some conflict over some branches overhanging their boundaries. My dad owns his own tree removal business and quoted on the job. The two owners agreed to get a quote, and they'll split the bill. The younger owner (40's) who was a Police Officer with a wife and 2 kids was happy with the quote. The old whinging neighbour was a tight arse, and deemed the quotes they got too expensive.

Not sure who came up with the idea, but the two owners decided to hire this Cherry Picker / EWP to do the job themselves. The younger guy was up in the bucket with a saw and removing the branches. Not sure how exactly, but he'd cut a large log and it has slid down towards him, and impaled him in the bucket. He died from it. From what the emergency services said, he would have only been alive for a few minutes and passed away.

Anyway, my Dad was called by emergency services to perform a rescue on this guy, as the log had impaled him, and gone through the bucket floor and wedged in a tree.

Needless to say, because some old guy didn't want to spend some money and get professionals in, a young guy died.

All over a couple bucks or to stubborn to ask for a little help.

Never should have happened. My great uncle died working on a tree. It was before I was born, so I only know what I have been told. He climbed a tree to trim some branches with his chainsaw. He fell and the chainsaw landed on his neck, decapitating him. I know the older saws had a trigger lock and I think he may have been using it. I don't know why, but it happened. Too many people take matters into their own hands without any understanding of what they are doing or what could happen.
