I've got a buddy with an XL 12 that is toast. It was his grandfather's and he would like it to run again just for nostalgia's sake. Sounds like the lower end is fubar, it will turn over to a certain point and then lock up and he says that he hears "rattling" in the lower end. He said he was running it a few years ago and it went from wide open to halt, no wind down, just locked up mid-cut.

How are these to work on?

There are 3 screws under the flywheel. They attatch the fuel tank to the chassis.

They are notorious for backing out & then they jam the flywheel & the engine "Locks up"

Pull the muffler. If the piston looks good, I bet the screws are backed out under the flywheel.

Its an easy fix. Just dont ruin the flywheel trying to get it off.

Gas tank screws

My father and I both had XL-12's. They were both several years old. One day mine froze up, next day his froze up. To the shop they went where the gas tank screws backed out as mention in the post above. What's the odds of them both doing this so close together. Easy fix however and mine's still running 20 years later. I don't run it much as I've kinda gotten used to having a brake on the saw.
