I found an interesting web page on cant hook / peavey history, then went one level up to find more interesting stuff on horse logging and the like.

Is a cant log called "cant" because you can't roll it? (A log with one side sawed...)

I always thought it is called a cant or spelled scant because you cant do nothing more with it.
