Okay I have looked around the site to find this answer and haven't found anything that answers what I am wondering about. I bought this stove a coupe years ago. It was already put together in the store. After the first few fires I noticed that the auto damper opens up completely the hotter the fire gets. but I just figured maybe that's how this thing works so I have left it. Now it just bugs me cause the more I think about it, it seems backwards. shouldn't it close the hotter the fire gets to keep a happy median. so I'm wondering if it had been put together wrong. I have not tried to change it. I figured I would ask on here and see what you all could tell me. help me understand please. thanks in advance.

That's one of the many complaints of the furnace. We had the 1500 for 20+ years, and I disabled the spring damper. It created an out of control fire many times. You are correct, the damper should close when hot and open when cooled.

I know you have read this many times I'm sure. I disabled mine when I first got the stove from the advise of many many people. I grinder the numbs off the spin draft on the ash Pan and that's how I regulate. It works great

Okay at least I know now that I'm not stupid for thinking what I'm thinking........ I will let it cool down today and unhook it and stop worrying about it.
I'm burning coal in it at the moment so it will last a bit. but its getting unhooked.

Make sure you block off the door damper completely if you go that rout

Auto damper on Hotblast units + automatic over fire every time. Thing is useless- jams up disconnect it use the spin craft on the ash drawer. If you are using coal there is a blower kit that gets mounted on the back. connected to a thermostat in the living areas. when heat called for kicks on blower. no good for wood though. Some have used that port to construct secondary burn tube systems in the fire box to good effect- don't know how much of those threads survived the big hack.

I know of no one who uses the failed door damper . This is a huge issue with all hot blasts . They are junk from the factory . Block it off and just use the spin draft on the ash drawer .
