I did a search on racing bars, didn't find an awful lot. Always wondered what the advantage of the big belly in the bar was.
Does it help keep the chain on with the big sprockets?
Eric

I magine its big so it doesn't have the tendancy to twist or curve to one direction.

I not the pro racer here, but the belly bar allows you to run the chain looser than normal and still stay in the bar groove, thereby less friction. You can get any custom bar from Cannon Machine Works. or email me and I can get it for you.

The closer to an oval, the less abrupt the deflection of the chain entering and leaving the sprockets and therefore less horsepower loss also.

I gave an explanation of the reason why belly bars are an advantage over a straight bars in a post quite some time ago. It when a picture of my 090 first appeared on Arboristsite and John Lambert was wondering about the bar at that time. If someone could find that post and bring it up, they could understand the reason better. I believe it was the Cannon bar company that made my first belly bar in the 50's. I made a pattern on a piece of cardboard and sent it to them and came back perfect roller tip and all, and so the trend started.

Thanks Don, but that is not the picture I was referring to.
Also after reviewing my records, it was the General Bar Co. that made my first belly bar, not the Cannon Bar Co.

Steve,

That is the correct picture I was referring to, but I also need the post that went to John Lambert when he inquired about the reason for having a belly bar. Is there anyone out there that could find that explaination that I posted for him?
