I"ve been reading about hot saws and now I want one. I have a 090G is this not a good saw for that becuase its gear driven?I know that stihl made it to run long bar and pull big chain and its rpms are about 8,000. Is that too slow? What are some other saws that would be a good stating saws and how much am I looking at spending ? Thanks SC

stihl 090g

hello sawcrazy,
I wish that 090 in the photo of art martins 090 was my saw. thats the fastest 090 around. When he runs it it beats all the competators.
The 090g isn"t the best saw to make a hot saw out of. you would have to change all of the gear drive setup. the 090G is only 6,8 cubic inches. the 090 direct drive model is 8.2 cubic inches. Im sending you a photo of the last 090 that was sold before they became unavailable. Gypo john Lambert sold it to Larry steiner (chainsaw 57) and sent it to me to massage the ports and carb and put a new cylinder head on it. It will be a dandy little hotsaw!

salmon belly bar

Hello Huskyman,
The shape of uncle art's bar is to lower the resistance on the chain as it is turning on the bar. if you held the chain along side the bar it will hang almost the same amount or curve as the curve of the bar hence you dont have to tighten the chain to pull it up to the flat lower half of the bar. when the chain is installed you can pull it along the top of the bar with your finger and thumb . there is almost no resistance to movement. art has a new type of bar he is playing with but i'd better let him explain it to you. its still top secret., but it really works. hello art, are you out there, send the boys a picture of your latest bar.

090 stihl

yo dennis,
no problem, currently that the fastest 090 out there. when art brings his 090 and john rupley(sawracr) runs it the rest of us know were going to be second or third. and he does this without a pipe or alcohol. he's a sly old fox!

Sawcrazy, if you are interested in an 090AV, a deal just fell into my hands today...I have a brand new 090AV still in the box..that is 9 years old...it is the "Made in West Germany" model..(as opposed to the "Made in Germany" model that I see more often)

The story goes that this lady and her husband were moving to Africa...and bought this 090 with a 59" bar..turns out something happened to the husband and they couldnt go...so they kept this saw in the basement trying to sell it and forgot about it...I found it the other day through the grapevine, but the bar has gone wayside...also when I made the deal they told me it was the Jungle model, but as it turns out..its the AV.....so I was going to put it on ebay when I get a chance, and my ???? camera working...lol...

So .... I am interested in your 090G, if its in good shape...maybe we can make a deal....if your 090G is in good or reasonably good shape, I am willing to trade this saw for yours and 1200.00.

If you are interested, let me know as soon as you can...

Hmmmm, little old lady and only to church on Sunday:D
Never mind the saw Dennis I want to hear more about the African jungle saw and how the husband disappeared into the jungle never to be seen again or so it was thought until he showed up at the Clearwater revival totin' a souped 090.

Hi Bruce, the jungle saw was a predecessor to the AV, largely used by people who know no better. The non AV saw is still used quite extensively in the jungle. If that don't tell ya how good Stihl is, than nothing will.

My wife could make some suggestions on the wallpaper topic I best not comment.
I showed my wife some of the racing chain video you shot by the way, her comment... "what a nasty sound".
I guess it's more a guy thing eh?
It didn't help I had the speakers turned right up and she wasn't expecting it:D

Dennis, is that 1200.00 us or canada? My 090 is good shape for its age. It has a 48" bar and the chain is about 50%. DO you just want the power head? What is a 090g worth about ?

The last 090G's I saw were about 400usd..maybe a bit more on ebay....and that is 1200usd....

Keener...seriously that is the story i was told...lol..sounds funny...but the tag on the box says it was sent from Stihl Ltd, to Norfolk Tractor in London Ont....the shipping date was Sept 7, 1993....and the tape on top of the box had never been cut, till I got it....the owners manuals, tool kit, chain guard...etc...are all in there....I think maybe she was a firewood cutter on the side..hehe, but seriously...there is not a scratch on it...

I am only interested in the powerhead..I am restoring one and need another...
