why you ask

Sorry,
Should have said chipper blades/knives. That's an interesting looking machine, it's kinda the same as a surface grinder but the head moves instead of the bed. I think you could probably do just as good with a surface grinder, and I see them come up for under $1000 sometimes. I'm thinking you could fabricate some kind of holder pretty easily to get the angle right.

I was thinking of doing my own blades, and maybe do some for local companies at the same time. It's not that time consuming, setup a couple blades, then go sharpen some saws, come back and flip the blades, go do something else. You could leave a set and go off to work, or leave a set and go to bed. Doing a few sets for other guys would bring down the cost of running the machine. Every dollar counts!

company i worked for had a small but ok machine set up and did the knives for crews all over the state.
Problem was I'd send up a real nice set but get sent back a worn out hacked set, so I stopped usin the servcie

You could do ok on selling the service but check how much and how long the abrasive wheels are as high wear n cost may chew into profits.

What you pay now for a set? My little bandit 65 2 knife set gits done for only $22 both knifes both sides hard to beat

Just make sure you have cooling fluid running over them while you are grinding or they will lose there temper.

I can totally relate to that. I lose my temper without cooling fluid too! :givebeer:

I haven't get a chipper yet, but have been looking around the last month. Going to look at a couple more on the weekend and hoping to buy before christmas. One big present sitting under a tree. It'll probably be a mid 90's bandit 250XP, 4 double sided 7 1/4" knives. Talking ot buddies they seem to be paying all different prices, and depends on how bad the knives are. Average price seems to be about $80 with weekly blade changes. That adds up to about $5k/year by the time you include some bolts. That's money I wouldn't mind keeping in my pocket.

Growing up my family owned a tool grinding business. I worked as a tool cutter/grinder for years as a youth. We made precision tools. Sharpening a chipper blade would be a piece of cake.
I always had the feeling they dont use the best steel for the job in chipper blades. I think they're using just high carbon steel, a better grade of tool steel, maybe with some cobalt would cost more but last a lot longer between sharpenings.
Maybe even Carbide inserts using the old blades for holders. Grinding out a groove and putting a set screw in to hold the carbide. That would keep costs down.

Weekly blade change? I never heard of anyone changing their blades weekly. I might change mine every 3 to 4 months.

I would feed myself into my chipper if I had to sharpen it weekly

I have a hansa blade sharpener, works really well, but since you dont do it wet you have to be careful about keeping the blades at a reasonable temp. Does our big and small chipper blades.
