I'm doing a big Euc removal for a guy, and I'm thinking about telling him he should just keep the big wood. That wood is the gold of firewood in this area, so he shouldn't throw it away just because the rounds are too big right now. Not sure if I should tell him to wait until next year to split it though or if he could split this week.

Seems pretty hacky to me to have a deal for a job, then decide that you're doing the customer a favor by leaving them "the gold of firewood". I hope the customer is kind enough to write you a check that's worth it's weight in paper, and not a penny more.

Custy wants the wood now and wants to know how much to split on the property.

Business 101..... I suggest you take a class in it. Not being sarcastic but may assist you in figuring out how much to charge to meet your overhead demands and make a profit. You should come up with a figure that you can equate into equipment and personel needed per hour. Then price based on how long it will take you.

Big demand for firewood in San Diego, especially this time of year. Its going to get down into the 50's every night for the next week.

Definitely, but I don't have the land to store it on, or I'd stick a splitter and worker together, and answer some demand for split euc.

euc

FTA FYI .... i m up north from you and i got to tell you IT SPLITS LIKE #### green or not. the grain is all screwy.. it sucks. its one of the hardest pain in the ass woods to split. tell him to wait... its a little easier if the wood is at least dry. cut short pieces or you will bust the splitter. o & next time post #### like this in the heating forum-- thats the way to go....

With hundreds of species in the genus you can't really go generalising, and they do vary a lot. Softer euc'sweigh very little and split easy green or seasoned, some of the harder ones you wont be splitting at all.

Growth conditions vary a lot too. Trees that grow with lots of space and resources grow quick and have wide spaced rings, almost split themselves. Old growth is dense, heavy and tight. Look out for twisting trees, a real bugger.

Have a go at splitting it. Try splitting with the grain rather than across it - work the axe 'around' the round rather than from side to side. Bigger rounds will split a lot easier if you rip them in half first.

Not all Euc's are gold in terms of firewood either.

And you could clear the rest of the forum out pretty easily by moving all the posts to either 'climbing and rigging equipment','chainsaws', 'arborist 101' or 'off topic'.

Most members post everything in here because you could wait a month before anyone responds to a question if it's posted anywhere else. This is where everyone looks first, no doubt.

I have differing opinions about how it splits. I'm going to just pull a cheap vert splitter out there and axe to see how this goes first hand. I'll say how it goes.

Guys, thanks for the insight here. I've always appreciated the knowledge and story telling about what people here know and have done in all the years I've been here. I don't always get to the formal commendations for everyone's efforts no doubt, but I appreciate it no less.
