I just bought my sisters truck from her, and wanted to see how having 4 Wheel Low would compare to my old truck with 2 wheel drive. I dropped the log across a smaller log to keep it out of the dirt. As a bonus the end of the bigger log was several inches off the ground. So, I dropped the tailgate a couple feet from the log and put two 2X4's under it, so it could slide on them, with out digging in to the ground. Backed up till the tailgate touched the log, put my half inch choker on the log, tied the choker to the bull line, put cheap cant hook in standard pocket to hold the rope to the right side of the trailer, hooked to hitch and pulled her up. From the time I dropped the trailer till the first log was on was less than 10 minutes. Having 4 low is much more controllable. Now I have to build a new steel gantry on the trailer so I can actually lift the logs up. Pulling them up the expanded steel ramp works, but not as nice as the gantry. Plus, with the gantry I can stack them, Joe.
I plan on building something like this out of steel that I can take on and off for loading logs.
