If it's on the ground and /or not covered.. all bets are off. It wont be dry, it will rot just like you describe.
I'm saying if it's stored properly ( in a shed or under a lean-to, not on damp ground) it will last.
The decay fungus simply wont grow in the wood if it's under 20% moisture, thats a constant for any part of the world.
And yes I know all about rain and humidity, I'm from NZ

I've already had Maple that was off the ground and the top covered that started to turn. It doesn't seem to last real long without going bad here. For that reason I keep it in the garage, because it is excellent wood. I have a few pieces of Silver Maple in rounds for next year that ALREADY are green on the cut ends with mold/fungus because it's been so wet here this year. Funny how certain woods get attacked while others don't..
